Group B Rally Cars Rule at Goodwood 72nd Members Meeting

Goodwood 72nd Members Meeting put on a great show last weekend and some of the stars included legendary Group B rally cars from the 1980’s who were put through their paces.

The legendary Group B era cars on display included MG Metro 6R4’s, RS200’s, Audi Sports Quattro, Lancia S4 Delta, Peugeot 205 T1 and a fantastic Renault 5 Turbo. It was tremendous to see all these beauties lined up on track and going up against the clock. The noise was sensational with the 6R4’s probably coming out on top with their Williams designed V6 engines howling off the start line. This Group B era has been well documented with manufacturers producing F1 levels of power and adding lightweight panels scoops and spoilers to the shopping car models that were favoured by old dear who lived next door (Metro 6R4 – Audi Quattro being an exception). The drivers of the period included Hannu Mikkola, Stig Blomqvist, Ari Vatanen, Walter Röhrl and Henri Toivonen who was tragically killed along with his co-driver Sergio Cresto in 1986. Today the closest we get to this period in rally is with modern day rallycross where cars are being built and entered into the FIA World Rallycross Championship for the likes of Liam Doran to drive.
