Podium Number 3 for Cal in Assen

Great work Cal – Assen, the Dutch TT, what a race.

A pole start but the first few laps were tough one for the Coventry rider as he battled with a heavy fuel load which was pushing the M1 wide in the corners. Cal managed to hang on to 5th place following a frenetic first few laps that saw Rossi push to the front and Lorenzo (fresh back from Spain with screws in his shoulder following a free practice high side) come from 12th position through to the leading group.

It was the traditional massive crowd (90,000) with the bike car parks rammed with many British fans making the journey over to Holland for this legendary race. As the fuel load lightened Cal was ‘on it’ producing a fantastic performance which saw him overtake Lorenzo, and real in Marquez where he pushed for a pass into 2nd place on the last 2 laps in which both riders touched and were lucky to stay upright. Cal now sits 4th in the World Championship standings.

The last few races I was thinking that Rossi was pretty much ready much ready to retire at the end of the season but his winning performance shows he still has what it takes and I think the rest of the season will be pretty interesting now that he has found a ‘feel’ that he likes and is back in the mix. Having said that Yamaha must have eyes on Cal for that seat in the works team.

Bradley Smith needs a mention – great ride which saw a fantastic move to take the two works Ducati’s of Hayden & Dovi on the last lap taking 9th position.

Scott Redding had a great ride in Moto2 and taking 2nd place keeps him in touch of the title. Could Suzuki should have their eyes on this man for their return in 2014…
