Donington Historic Festival Report & Photos

A fantastic day of historic motorsport at Donington was brought to a tragic end last Sunday, with Mini racer Christian Devereux sadly passing away from injuries received during the Master’s Touring Car race. Our sincerest condolences go to his family and loved ones.

The day started on a bright note, with a record crowd being treated to a thrilling HSCC Formula 2 race. Nick Fleming, Andy Smith and Phil Gladman enjoyed a three – way tussle for the lead, until pitlane starter Martin Stretton and Peter Meyrick joined in . Fleming held first position heading into the closing stages of the race, but ran wide at Coppice and was swiftly demoted to fourth by the chasing pack.

Martin Stretton then hit the front, having passed the entire field in his March 742, but was cruelly denied by mechanical failure less than two laps from home. A new lap record, at an average speed of over 105 mph, was a small consolation as Andy Smith took the win.

Gareth Evans used his ex-Michael Schumacher Sauber Mercedes C11 to dominate the Group C race, leading every lap of the day’s fastest race. David Mercer took second in his C1 class Spice SE90, followed by the C2 spec example of Mike Donovan in third place.

A packed pre-1940 Grand Prix field made a spectacular sight as they charged down Craner Curves. Mark Gillies took a comfortable victory in ERA R3A, the US based driver giving the 79 year old car a real workout around Donington Park. David Morris took second place, 25 seconds adrift of Gillies, with Callum Lockie finishing third in a stunning Maserati 6CM

Leo Voyazides took a joyless win the pre-1966 Touring Car event, his Ford Falcon Sprint finishing ahead of experienced Kiwi Roger Wills’ Mercury Comet Cyclone. The race was red flagged four minutes from the chequered flag to allow medics to attend to the tragic accident at Coppice Corner.
