Dunlop Relishes Mugello Challenge For Moto2 & Moto3 Teams

Dunlop is looking forward to the Mugello round on the MotoGP calendar. The Italian track has always been a good circuit for getting the best out of tyres.

Characteristic bumps and high grip are returning following resurfacing two years ago. The teams have the challenge of finding a set-up to get the right bike balance given the twists, up-hill and down-hill turns.

Moto2 riders can choose the same soft ‘302’ front tyre that all but one rider elected to use at Le Mans, but all other options are different. The alternative front will be the ‘717’ hard compound which has historically been a favourite among the Moto2 riders on that track. The ‘3855’ medium option rear, which offers high resistance to wear while providing a consistent amount of grip, will be on offer along with the ‘3838’ hard tyre that impressed riders so much in 2012 that they were accounted for 30% of rear tyre usage throughout the season because of the rider confidence they gave to the last lap of the race leading to many lap records being set at the end of race distances.

Moto3 riders also have a change in allocation with a new hard rear compound tyre being available. The new specification has faster warm-up times compared to the previous version. The much-favoured ‘M’ compound will also be available for the rear along with ‘M’ and ‘H’ fronts as used last year.

Dunlop’s work continues after race-day with testing for both Moto2 and Moto3 at the track. Dunlop will be testing the latest development tyres for future innovations.

Clinton Howe, Operations Manager Motorcycle Grand Prix comments:

“Last year we had a 50/50 split for both front and rear tyres choice in Moto2 so it will be interesting to see if we have the same again with the same tyres on offer. We had a similar split at Le Mans in 2012 but this year there were only four riders that had different choices to the majority. The tests next week will be a good opportunity to see how the designs that we have evaluated perform on track. The riders will have had a good few days of riding on the track so will be well up to speed to try the options for future rounds.”
