Joel Clark: Amazing cut Vinyl Art

Whilst wandering the stalls and stands in the paddock at the recent Kop Hill Climb I came across Joel Clark and had a chat with him about his amazing artwork and skills.

Being a motor sport fan and a graphic designer too, I homed in on the bright and graphic artwork from some distance! The Group B Rally piece being my favourite. After chatting with Joel it was revealed that unlike most artists out there his medium is not paint but sign writer’s vinyl! And what amazing flat, clean results it produces. Joel honed these skills during is first job after leaving school, designing and making vinyl stickers for race teams, as a sign writer based at the Silverstone circuit.

Limited edition prints will be available soon on paddock42, or you may want to get in touch with Joel direct for a commission – he also produces fantastic ‘traditional’ art too.

Joels Bio

My love of Motorsport goes back to growing up, in and around Brackley, nr, Silverstone. From early memories of waiting and hoping to see a Ducati pass through the town – after a late 70’s Bike GP – to my Father taking me to Silverstone vintage race meets, throughout the 80’s, I have been a life-long Petrolhead.

When it came to leaving school, I was lucky enough to get a job designing and making vinyl stickers for race teams, for a Signwriter based at the circuit. I soon however decided to go to Art College and 6 years later, left to pursue a career as a Creative in the Advertising industry, where I created famous TV ad’s, posters and multi-media campaigns – in some of the world’s biggest agencies.

15 odd years later and in the depths of recession, I found myself with nothing else to do but paint. Since then I have been building up my collection and improving my skills in leaps-and-bounds. I am now in a position where I can give this ‘Artist’ job a proper go – of which would be my dream come true (even more than still wanting to be an F1 driver). Even though Motorsport is my first choice of subject, I happily take on most subjects – from architecture to animals – as my work illustrates.

I have now gone full-circle and returned to the unique skill I learnt back at Silverstone; of hand-cutting many of the vinyl graphics found on race cars during 1990/91, by again hand-cutting vinyl, only now to create art work’s of classic racing cars/liveries.

From my research so far; I believe I am the only Artist using vinyl as a medium – therefore offering totally unique, contemporary Auto Art.
