BRSCC Mazda MX-5 SuperCup takes on Silverstone

The opening round of the 2014 BRSCC Mazda MX-5 SuperCup takes place at Silverstone this weekend the 5th and 6th of April on the International Circuit.

Following a year of regeneration in 2013 for Mazda MX-5 Mk3 racing, 2014 will see more than 20 drivers take to the Silverstone circuit in identical MX-5 2.0 Sports to begin the the new season.

Returning to the SuperCup this year are 2013 race winners Mike Comber, Matt Davies and Abbie Eaton who will be looking to set the pace early on in the season. However, with further talent arriving to the championship in the form of FunCup front runner Lawrence Howlett and reigning Max5 Racing champion David Chapman stepping up to a full season’s racing in the SuperCup alongside the other new and returning drivers, the finishing order for the first race is impossible to predict.

2013 SuperCup champion Andrew Clarkson also looks set to return this season and make a bid to defend his title, which went right down to the finale last year at Oulton Park. Arch rival Paul Sheard is taking a back seat in 2014 and will only compete in selected rounds in order to concentrate on running no less than 8 cars in his Paul Sheard Racing team, while further team entries from Michael Comber Racing, Triple-R and Concorde Motorsport will ensure a lively paddock.

Technical changes implemented over the winter should see the cars setting new lap records at every circuit on the calendar, with the addition of a Racing Beat Europe stainless steel 4-1 exhaust manifold, Jetex race catalytic converter and adjustable Eibach front and rear anti-roll bars. Power is boosted to around 180BHP and with cars running the control Sanspeed ECU map and Federal tyres, there will be no runaway winners.

The format for 2014 gives drivers a 20 minute practice session before qualifying at the majority of double header meetings starting with Silverstone, which will help the drivers to find their way around the new circuit layout. The SuperCup cars have been allocated garages in the Grand Prix Wing pitlane – this is where you will find us from Friday onwards as drivers get in some final testing before the lights go out for the first race.
