Tuthill Porsche first to commit to South African Classic Rally

Following its record-breaking 17-car entry on the 2013 East African Safari Classic Rally, renowned UK Porsche specialist, Tuthill Porsche, is amongst the first teams to commit to the inaugural Classic Rally of South Africa.

Held over five days from September 1, the 2014 Classic Rally of South Africa will cover more than 2,000 kms, including 800 kms of special stages through the incredible Mpumalanga Valley, close to the Kruger National Park, and South Africa’s borders with Mozambique and Swaziland.

“Over five days the 2014 Classic Rally of South Africa will cover more than 2,000 kms…”

The South African Classic is the brainchild of Surinder Thatthi, former head of the East African Safari Classic Rally and FIA World Council representative for Africa. Early rally entrants, John Lloyd and co-driver Adrian Cavenagh, have chosen a Tuthill Porsche ‘Safari’ 911 to attack this epic endurance event. Lloyd has previously tasted success with Tuthills, finishing fourth overall on the 2005 Safari Classic in a Porsche 911 prepared at the rally team’s base in Wardington, Oxfordshire.

“We’re excited to be heading for South Africa, racing to win in an all-new location,” says Richard Tuthill. “The team behind Classic South Africa is the same group that made Safari such a test of car and character. With a challenging route through a glorious landscape, no doubt this rally will be just as exciting.

“Thanks to discounted entry fees on this inaugural event, we’ve created some attractive arrive-and-drive packages with full car support. Enjoying a Tuthill Safari Porsche at speed through some of the most beautiful scenery anywhere is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity, not to be missed. The opportunity to break new ground in rallying is rare, so we’re looking forward to a strong Team Tuthill presence in Nelspruit on September 1st.”

Drivers interested in experiencing a Tuthill Porsche 911 on the Classic Rally South Africa can email Richard Tuthill at richard@francistuthill.co.uk or call Tuthill Porsche on 01295 750 514.

More about Tuthill Porsche…..

Based near Banbury in Oxfordshire, Tuthill Porsche employs more than twenty full time staff and is dedicated to maintaining, restoring or even transforming classic Porsche vehicles including 356, 911 and historic Porsche racing machines.

Company founder, Francis Tuthill drove his first marathon rally in 1977, building a Volkswagen Beetle for the London to Sydney Rally. Returning to the event in 1993 with a Tuthill-prepared Porsche 911, Francis took overall victory. Since then, Tuthill Porsche 911s have claimed wins in rallies and circuit racing all around the world. A Tuthill-prepared Porsche 911 RSR claimed back-to-back championship titles in Masters Historic Sportscar racing during 2011 and 2012.

Despite many attempts by the Porsche works team, a Tuthill 911 driven by the original World Rally Champion, Björn Waldegård, was the first Porsche ever to win the gruelling East African Safari Rally. “If I’d had this 911 in the 1970’s, we would have won the race then!” declared the Swedish legend.

Voted 2013 International Historic Motoring Specialist of the Year by a panel of vintage motorsport experts, Tuthill Porsche took seventeen vintage Porsche 911s on last year’s Safari Classic: the largest private rally team ever assembled. Over 120 mechanics and support staff worked flat out on the 10-day event. Their efforts are the subject of a 45-minute documentary, currently airing on Motors TV, with excerpts featured on the official Porsche YouTube channel.

Tuthill Porsche is also famous for its Below Zero Ice Driving camp, held on the frozen lakes of Sweden every winter. Many world famous drivers and hundreds of classic Porsche enthusiasts have completed the Below Zero course, which is led by British and European rally champions as well as Richard Tuthill, a British and European rally-winning driver.
