BMCRC Round 4, Oulton Park

The British Motorcycle Racing Club descended on Oulton Park over the May bank holiday weekend for a packed programme of 32 races taking place over two days.

Typically, the British bank holiday weather did its best to disrupt proceedings, with Saturday’s portion of the meeting being called off at lunchtime due to some very heavy rain flooding the Cheshire circuit. This caused each class to lose one of their four scheduled races across the weekend, but bank holiday Monday was sunny and warm, ensuring the hundreds of competitors got to sample the country’s most challenging circuit in the dry.

Before the rain came, the day had started off with a very close MRO Powerbikes encounter. Barry Champman took the win in the first of the meetings’ three races, with the podium positions being covered by under half a second. BSB refugee Tom Tunstall had been the favourite going into the race, but was forced to retire after only one lap. When the Powerbikes grid reconvened on Monday morning, Tunstall was untouchable, dominating both races with winning margins of well over 20 seconds.

The Lansdowne British Historic Series was a welcome addition to the Bemsee paddock, featuring a packed grid of Norton and Matchless 1960s GP racers. Mike Edwards took all three race victories across the weekend, having to fight very hard on Monday, with winning margins of 0.072 seconds and 0.121 seconds for the day’s two races.

Team Paddock 42 rider Grant Robertson had an excellent weekend in Cheshire, taking a third place finish in the opening Minitwins race on Saturday morning. Robertson went two better on Monday, taking a pair of hard fought victories over Paul Wilby in the Bank Holiday sunshine.

In the MRO 600cc class, local rider Chris Mort took the spoils on Saturday morning just as the first spots of rain arrived in Cheshire, while on Monday the victory’s were shared between Jamie Devine and Tommy Philp.
