BCV8 SNETTERTON 300

A Bank Holiday Sunday meeting on the Snetterton 300 circuit got together 25 BCV8 drivers, a great showing. We arrived to a busy Saturday very wet test day and a full paddock but the majority moved away by the late afternoon. We woke up on Sunday to a dry day and sunshine.

On the day we had Eight Class D, Four Class C, Nine Class B, Three Class AB and a new young driver in Class A for his first drive.

Qualifying was first on the mornings’ timetable with a 7.30 Scrutineering and a 9am practice. Practice went smoothly for most people except Paul Linfield who had terminal engine problems in a newly acquired Standard V8 and Spencer McCarthy who also had problems with his engine. Mark Scott appeared OK in practice but didn’t make the grid when he discovered while doing the TSCC practice that he had a cam issue.

Pole went to Russell McCarthy with a 2.10.86 who would have sat alongside Spencer M who had managed a 2.11.19 before he came in. On Row two Neil Fowler on a 2.11.58 alongside Simon Cripps on a 2.11.83.

On row three Ollie Neaves racing on his birthday with a 2.11.85 sitting next to Ian Prior with 2.14.48. On row four Rob Spencer back out in his D class car with a 2.14.66 alongside James Wheeler out again with a 2.15.05.

On row five C Class Pole Ken Deamer with a 2.19.50 alongside B Class Pole first time out for Max Cawthorn in a newly built car on a 2.23.10. Row six Jonnie Wheeler out in his newly completed Class C V8 with a 2.24.04 alongside Chris Forrest’s Standard V8 on a 2.24.07

Row seven Jonathan Upchurch back out in his V8 on a 2.24.31 alongside Babak Farsian on 2.24.66. On row eight Ben Tovey back out with a new front after Brands on a 2.26.08 alongside Mark Scott’s vacant spot.

Row nine Class AB Pole with another Birthday Simon Tinkler with 2.27.15 his life just beginning at the grand age of 40, alongside Mike Harris with 2.28.32 and behind on row Ten Ron Watt with a 2.28.64 next to septuagenarian Bob Luff with 2.28.85. On row eleven Jordan Spencer out now in BCV8 in the Class C Car with a 2.31.00 alongside Howard Grunden with a 2.31.96. On row twelve Paul Linfield’s vacant spot with Brian Smethurst on a 2.39.82 and finishing the grid Guy Samuels out in the ex ‐Spencer McCarthy green Roadster for the first time with a 2.57.12 challenging Jordan for the youngest driver.

THE RACE

Class D

From the lights Russell got a good start but Ollie from the third row came through to take second place as they went up to Riches. Behind another good start from Rob Spencer from row four, then Neil Fowler, Simon Cripps, Ian Prior and James Wheeler with a few mid fielders taking to the grass at Riches. Up round Montreal and down into Palmer Ollie took charge with Russell now in second place and both pulling out a slight gap from Simon Cripps now in third and the remainder of the D class cars.Russell was hard on Ollies’ tailpipe as they went down into Agostini and out of my sight.

I then saw lots of smoking tyres and a coming together, Russell off onto the infield and Ollie slowing down unsure of his damage. Rob Spencer came through the tyre smoke with Simon, Neil, Ian and James and the rest of the field now cautiously putting the power back on.

Rob Spencer came round to cross the line in first place with a bit of a gap to Ian Prior then Neil Fowler and James Wheeler and Simon Cripps, Simon having a moment round the back of the circuit.

Rob led the field until lap three when Ian managed to pull past to lead the race, Neil hounding Ian and passing on lap six where he stayed to the flag taking the Overall win and a new lap record. Rob hung on to Ian to take third overall at the flag. By lap five Simon had developed some water problems and had slowed and pulled off and James Wheeler managed to keep it all together to come home fourth overall and fourth in class.

Class C

Ken Deamer had a fast but lonely race now joined in class by Jonnie Wheeler out for the first time in his C Class V8 but still waiting to fit the 3.9 engine Jonnie having a solitary class outing but coming home second in class. Jonathan Upchurchout again after his engine rebuild lost out on lap six re‐joining one lap down but finishing the race. Jordan Spencer now also enjoying the Class C of BCV8 and having a good fewlapswith Babak in Class B, Jordan coming home third in Class after a good race in only his second time out in the car. Ken led the class to the flag taking the class honours and a lap record in the process.

Class B

Babak took control of the class from the lights where he remained having a few close laps with Jordan. Behind it looked like the beginning of a good B class race with Max Cawthorn, Chris Forrest and Ben Tovey until Max and Chris came into the Pits on lap four. Ben Tovey then latched onto Ron Watt and the pair of them had a great dice lap after lap swapping places with Ben taking the flag just in front of Ron. Howard Grunden down the field a bit further having a bit of a lonely class race as did Brian Smethurst. Babak brought the class home from lights to flag.

Class AB

Mike Harris and Simon Tinkler had a very close battle from lap three Mike managing to hold Simon off until the last lap when Simon pulled past to take the class honours and lap record. Bob Luff keeping them in sight but just not able to catch and join in.

Class A

Only one in class, we are still waiting for Alex Lyons to get his car finished. Finished though, with lots of help from Dad Peter, Guy Samuels, first time out, kept it together from lights to flag.

Race report by Pam McCarthy. Next event is the MGCC SILVERSTONE 90 on the 21st and 22nd June.
