Fully funded drive in the 2015 Ginetta Juniors?

One teenager is set to enjoy a fully funded season in the 2015 Ginetta Junior Championship worth £60,000, after the Yorkshire marque confirmed their annual Ginetta Junior Scholarship will take place at Bedford Autodrome on Monday 27th – Wednesday 29th October.

Arguably the biggest prize in UK motorsport, the Ginetta Junior Scholarship attracts some of the UK’s top karters looking to make the transition to sports car racing. With an increased capacity for this year, the competition can take up to 80 entrants across the three day event.

Having participated in motorsport master classes and practiced their skills on driving simulator, each competitor will be assessed during one of two qualification days where they will be scored on their driving ability, including car control and ability to improve across the sessions, as well as their fitness and media skills.

The top 15 entrants from each day will then be invited to join Ginetta at the final round on Wednesday 29 October where there will be more in-depth driving assessments, combined with a formal interview with Ginetta’s commercial team.

Ginetta Championships manager Ashley Gallagher said about the selection process; “Being a racing driver is not always about how fast you can go around a circuit; we look particularly for a driver who is able to listen to instruction and improve throughout their time with us, as well as represent the brand in a positive way.  The Ginetta Junior Scholarship will be awarded to the driver who shines in the eyes of Ginetta, not only by offering ‘the overall racing package’ of speed, an ability to learn, professionalism, fitness and team work, but also as a marketable individual who will run well in our sponsorship-backed G40.”

To be eligible, entrants’ date of birth must be between 01.01.1999 and 21.03.2001 and they must not have previously competed in a circuit race, however, drivers with karting experience are actively encouraged.

All entrants are invited to join Ginetta for a familiarisation day at Rockingham Motor Speedway on Sunday 17 August to learn the fundamental skills of G40 driving in a controlled and non-assessed environment. This coincides with the Ginetta Summer Festival, which is a fun day out for all the family, with complementary food and drink, go-karting and fun fair.

Ginetta Chairman Lawrence Tomlinson gave entrants this piece of advice; “The Ginetta Junior Scholarship allows us to give an incredible opportunity to a driver we believe could ascend to the very top of a motorsport career, through the various Ginetta formulae and onto GT racing. I am always astounded by the incredible level of talent on display and picking one winner really is an arduous task; so come prepared, know where you want to take your racing career and listen to all the advice on offer.”

As the most popular British Touring Car Championship support series, the Ginetta Junior Championship is UK’s highest-profile race series in terms of press coverage and spectator appeal, with all races broadcast on ITV Sport and having being the subject of a CBBC television series in early 2014, offering unrivalled publicity for the lucky winner on their car racing debut.

Previous winners include 2014 British GT4 race winner Oli Basey-Fisher, and current Ginetta Junior Championship competitors Jamie Chadwick and Alex Sedgwick, with the latter currently backed by national lubricants brand, Carlube.
