HSCC Cadwell Park – doing the Double

Sam Mitchell was the man to beat the other weekend (21/22 June) at the Historic Sports Car Club’s Wolds Trophy race meeting at Cadwell Park.

It was a win win weekend for the Gloucestershire youngster in the HSCC’s Historic Formula Ford Championship driving a Merlyn Mk20 dominating the first race but Ben Simms battled hard all race with only a second or so between them as they went over the line.

Cadwell Park celebrates its 80th birthday season this year and the weekends meeting included racers from the late 1950’s through to the early 1980’s. The event also included the Justin Haler Trophy races for the Historic Formula 3 Championship, in which another Merlyn (Mk14A) took a double win in the hands of David Methley.

More double wins followed in the HSCC Classic Formula 3 Championship with Simon Hadfield in his March 743 and in the HSCC Classic Racing Car Championship wins were shared by Michael O’Brien in his Merlyn Mk20 and Antony Ross who was piloting his Lotus 59.

Tim Davies took the double win in the ByBox Historic Touring Car Championship in his Lotus Cortina and again Mark Charteris did the double in his Mallock Mk20/21 in the HSCC Classic Clubmans Championship races.

In the HSCC 70s Road Sports Championship, Oliver Ford won both his races in his Lotus Europa, but it was a Lotus against Lotus battle as the Elan of Julian Barter and Iain Daniels put up a good battle in both races. Peter Thompson took his Marcos 1800GT to one win in the HSCC Historic Road Sports Championship, the other win secured by Patrick Ward-Booth in his Ginetta G4.

The Reynard SF81 of Graham Fennymore Gin was a double winner in the HSCC Historic Formula Ford 2000 Championship, but it was no easy result as Fennymore was chased hard by Tom Smith (RP27) and Benn Simms (RP30) in there respective Royales.

Grids were separated for front and rear-engined cars and the Millers Oils Formula Junior Championship featured four races with former champion Jon Milicevic in his Cooper T59 winning both rear-engined races and Mark Woodhouse in his Elva 100 and and Stuart Roach in his Alexis having to share the front-engined wins.

The HSCC season continues on the 12/13 July at Brands Hatch Grand Prix for the Historic Super Prix.
