British Rallycross Lydden Hill Results & Gallery

Paddock42 travelled to Kent on Bank Holiday Monday to support Team P42 driver Charlie Bean, wonder the paddock and shoot the action trackside at the British Rallycross round at Lydden Hill.

Well we knew it was going to be wet and wet it was, but it was great to be back at Lydden Hill after a few years of absence and fantastic to see a shiny new race control tower and media centre. Walking around the paddock we were able to appreciate the engineering up close, highly modified and well designed, many of these racers were clearly not built on a budget. Eight championships fought it out over a series of 3 heats and a final and with plenty of surface water it was a battle of grip.

Practice was over in 3 laps so drivers had only a short time to get a feel for set up and traction, then it was back to the pits to make any changes. There is not much time between practice, heats and finals as cars for the next race joined the track as soon as the previous finishes and competitors are pulling back into the pits/paddock. A generally seamless well oiled process that other circuit race organisers would envy.

Rallycross makes for some interesting racing, a joker lap is a longer section of track that drivers have to take once during their race, this ensures the racing is close and anything can happen. Drivers decide when to take the ‘joker’ and race craft has its role to play…

Hard charging was the order of the day, with some notable drives from Ollie O’Donovan, Craig Lomax, Kiefer Hudson, Dave Bellerby and mention has to made of the furious sideways style of Vincent Bristow in his E36 BMW. Close battles were played out across the meeting, the Mini’s and Hot Hatches demonstrated real door handle to door handle competition. If they were giving out and entertainment trophy, then this should be awarded to the RX150’s, fierce bike engined racers that can be flicked sideways at the turn of a wheel and a press of a pedal.

The mixture of cars was varied from the usual modified Japanese, Fords and Citroen’s to fairly stock road saloons. Great to see the old skool Rallycross heros in the Retro Rallycross Championship which saw battles between Minis, Metro 6R4, Fiestas, a flame spitting VW Beetle and a rapid Porsche 911 which listening to the engine note had been seriously ‘breathed’ on.

Paddock42’s Charlie Bean put in a great performance winning all of his heats and final in the Junior Swift Rallycross. In a spectacular battle with Jake Taylor it was bumper to bumper stuff with the young driver from Ripon demonstrating his race craft along with rapid pace, surely a future Rallycross star in the making.
