Oulton Park GT Cup, VAG Trophy, GTI’s, Alfa’s & Masters…

A dramatic day’s racing at Oulton Park saw a pair of  MSVR championship titles go down to the wire, with the GT Cup Championship and Dunlop VAG Trophy crowning their champions on the final day of the season.

Jim Geddie headed into the day’s to GT Cup rounds having already sealed the GTO class title, but with the overall championship title still up for grabs. Geddie qualified his McLaren on pole for the opening race of the day, but was beaten off the line by the fast starting Porsche of Oliver Bryant. Geddie was content to stay behind the Porsche until an early safety car period closed the field back up. Once the race was restarted, the McLaren surged into the lead and took a comfortable victory, and with it the overall GT Cup title. Second place went to the charging Marcus Clutton, after a fantastic drive from the middle of the pack in his Chevron, with the Plant/Bryant Porsche completing the podium.

Race two was shortened after a sizeable shunt at Old Hall involving several cars. Once the debris had been cleared, Marcus Clutton took the win in the V8 powered Chevron, ahead of Jim Geddie in second and Darren Nelson’s GTC class Ferrari 458 in third.

The Dunlop VAG trophy, Class B runners Darren Bedford and Mike Smith headed into the final race of the season level on points at the top of the class table. Bedford made the decisive pass on Mike Smith on lap 5, and was able to hold off Smith until the end to take second in class, and with it the VAG Trophy title. Ex-BTCC racer Harry Vaulkhard won the race overall in his Golf, ahead of Stewart Lines and David Fairbrother in their Sciroccos.

In the Dunlop Mk2 Gold GTi Championship, the same three drivers finished in the top three in both races. Jason Tingle took the opening race of the day by just 0.164 seconds from Tom Witts, with Josh Johnson further back in third. In the second race of the day, Witts turned the tables and crossed the line first, beating Tingle b y four tenths of a second. Josh Johnson again took third.

The Masters All-Comers historic race was taken by ex-F1 driver Mike Wilds and Steve Guglielm in a glorious BMW CSL ‘Batmobile’ recreation, ahead of Mark Wright and David Coyne’s Ford Escort RS1800.
