Walter Hayes Trophy 2014

Boyd fights through to victory – After spinning out at the start of his Semi-Final, Wayne Boyd put his Festival disaster behind him and clawed his way through to take the victory in a chaotic final at a wet Silverstone in the Walter Hayes Trophy.

Nearly 120 Formula Ford 1600’s took part in the Walter Hayes Trophy this year and as usual six heats, a progression and last chance race took place before the two Semi-Finals. Scott Malvern dominated his heat and led the full distance in the first Semi-Final. Malvern was pushed hard by Chris Middlehurst after the latter closed the gap in lappery but was unable to find a way past the former Formula Ford GB and Formula Renault BARC champion. Niall Murray was the best of the rest in third, ten seconds back, ahead of Michai Stephens and Jonathan Hoad. After spinning to the back of the field at Copse on the opening lap, Wayne Boyd recovered to seventh.

Michael Moyers was the dominant runner in the second Semi-Final, beating Joey Foster and Peter Dempsey. Jake Byrne beat Oliver White in a tight battle for fourth. Aaron Telitz finished in eighth after fighting his way through the progression and last chance race following a clash with Ben Mitchell in their heat. Mitchell joined Ciaran Haggerty, who was involved in an incident, as the ‘big guns’ not to make it to the final after the heat ‘high-flyer’ suffered mechanical problems in the semi.

Semi-Final two winner, Moyers spun at Becketts on the opening lap of the final into the gravel. That left Malvern and Dempsey to battle for the lead but a clash between the pair at Luffield took them out of the race too. Foster went on to lead before falling back on lap four after contact with Murray at Becketts. Middlehurst was the driver to head the race next and did so until lap twelve when Boyd fought his way to the front after starting 14th.

With three laps remaining Boyd led Robert Hall, Murray, Middlehurst and Stephens in a five-car tussle for honours. Murray fell to the rear of the pack on the 13th lap allowing the top two to dice for the win. Hall took the position on the final lap before Boyd slid through Brooklands to take it back and he beat Hall to the chequered flag with Stephens in third.

With Richard Tarling and Luke Cooper making it to the main final, they wouldn’t race in the Historic/Classic competition. Jamie Jardine led the way until the penultimate lap when Michael Mallock muscled his way to the front. Connor Murphy took third after Tom Brown spun out of that position. David Wild was fourth, beating Klaus Dieter-Hackel and GT racer Aaron Scott.

Twenty-nine ladies were ‘Racing for a Record’ in the BWRDC handicap event. Sarah Franklin (Renault Clio) took the lead on the 17th lap and held the position to take the victory, even if she didn’t know it. Stacey Dennis (Alfa Romeo 147) also passed Caroline Gilbert (Mini Cooper) before the flag to finish second. Wendy Mortimer (JCW Mini) was fourth with Amy Barker (Mazda MX5) and Barbara Shillaker (Peugeot 106) completing the top six after Maxine Nicholls (Toyota MR2) spun on the final lap.

The HSCC ran their two Allcomers races on Saturday, as usual. Jon Finch took the honours in the open-wheel race after a great Chevron B34 scrap with Andrew Huxtable. Chris Lord (Van Diemen RF82) was the best of the rest. After stating from the pits, Andrew Schryver (Chevron B26) won the closed-wheel race beating Michael Schryver (Chevron B6) by seven seconds. Myles Castaldlini (Davrian Mk8) passed Mike Gardiner (TVR Griffith) on the ninth lap to take third. David Hall (Lotus Cortina) won the touring car part of the race, beating Roger Godfrey (Mini Cooper).

On Sunday, again two Allcomers racers were held. Henry Chart (Dallara F305) dominated the open-wheel race by lapping the whole field. Mark Harrison (Dallara F306) finished second ahead of Cian Carey (Renault Tatuus). Jon-Paul Ivey (Radical PR6) held on to the honours in the diverse field that ran in the closed-wheel race. He beat Dave Coyne (March 717) who muscled his 8.8 litre machine to second after a great scrap with Ray Mallock (Mallock Mk18), who later retired. That allowed Oliver Bull (Caterham CSR) to take third ahead of Chris Child (Nemesis KME98).
