Neil Howard Memorial Stages…Oulton Park

Subaru Impreza WRC driver Stephen Simpson took victory in the 2014 running of the Neil Howard Memorial Stages rally, bringing down the curtain on a fantastic season of motorsport at Oulton Park.

Simpson led from start to finish, taking advantage of the wet opening stages to surge into a commanding lead over rally sponsor Graham Coffey, who was gunning for his third straight victory on the event. However, at the end of a sodden Stage 2, Coffey was 11 seconds off the pace, and this gap proved too large to make up over the remainder of the day.

Stage 3 introduced a watersplash for the drivers to contend with, as the rain stopped and the sun made a brief appearance in the Cheshire countryside. Coffey regained a second on this stage, but was unable to press the advantage on Stage 4. The competition then moved to the Super Special stage, with rallycrosser Kevin Proctor taking the stage win to begin challenging Graham Coffey for second place.

During the afternoon, Stephen Simposon took another three stage victories to cement his first place, allowing him to cruise through the final Super Special to victory. The event had a further sting in the tail for Graham Coffey, as Kevin Proctor overhauled the Fiesta WRC driver to take second place. While the leading positions were dominated by the Class D WRC cars, the other class victories were taken by John Clayton (Class A), Lee Farrer (Class B) and Julian Jones (Class C).
