Flat out for 8 hrs. P42 talks to racer Scott Kavanagh

Endurance racing is getting more and more popular, so much so that when the UK Fun Cup travels to Belgium for the annual 25hr, 160 cars line up on the grid with drivers from all over Europe trying to be the first through La Source… Paddock42 caught up with Fun Cup driver and all round racer Scott Kavanagh to chew the fat and discuss racing in the Championship.

P42: Scott the 2015 season is fast approaching but how did you get started in racing?

SK:

In 1991 I raced in Pre 85 FF1600, did my research and bought a Van Diemen RF84 . It was that easy, no ARDs test, just applied and entered. Came 8th in my first race.

P42: That was a good start! How did you go from single seaters to end up in the Fun Cup paddock?

SK:

Reading Autosport every week and feeling the need to get back into racing following a short break after FF1600. I had been Pro karting and a couple of other drivers wanted to try car racing so we bought a Fun Cup car and it all went from there.

P42: So from sprint races to endurance, what do you enjoy most about this championship?

SK:

The great thing about endurance racing is being part of a team, its good fun, you get lots of track/driving time and importantly you can race on a reasonable budget.

P42: The budget battle – there is always something needed! So far, of your time in this paddock, what has been your most memorable race?

SK:

Spa 25hrs all of them! Spa is such a legendary circuit and it is a challenging track, with often challenging conditions, tough for teams and drivers but an unforgettable experience every time.

P42: In the diary for this year then…This season you are running 2 cars and you have some drives available?

SK:

Yes all go this season, two Cars, with a minimum of 3 drivers needed with up to a maximum of  6. It all depends on what individual drivers/ teams want, happy to discuss really.

P42: How is the team made up, who manages the support?

SK:

Well, Phil and the guys from www.trackcars4hire.co.uk, they are a good laugh and they produce quick cars.

P42: From a drivers perspective is it just a case of pay your money, turn up and strap yourselves in?

SK:

It can be if you want, but you are welcome to get your hands dirty if you enjoy that part of it. Personally I do!

P42: Got to know how it works to make it go faster  – costs?

SK:

Per car it’s about £6-7000 per race depending on the circuit, but this can be split between 2-6 drivers but remember you get a good amount of track time for this, races usually last between 4 and 8 hours and you have 1 hour qualifying…

P42: Many thanks Scott see you in the paddock.
