MSVR Car Club Championships Silverstone

Silverstone played host to MSVR last weekend (14th/15th June) with drivers and teams from the MSVT Team Trophy, Caterhams, VAG Trophy, GT Cup, Mini Challenge and the Monopostos all filling the paddock. Saturday was a distinctly wet affair with so much rain coming down that marshals had to sweep off the pools of water between sessions, Sunday however had plenty of cloud but the track remained dry.

57 cars took to the grid in the Monopostos with multiple classes, close racing and 13 DNF’s all added to the excitement of Sundays race for the UK’s largest single-seater racing club. The Caterhams were also at the Northamptonshire track ‘en-masse’ with 56 cars going out to qualify and ultimately going into battle over 2 races with 3 classes filling the grid, always ‘door handle to door handle’ stuff.

GT Cup added some endurance racing to the meetings mix with a fine display of racing Supercars with the Mclaren MP4 12C of Jim Geddie leading the charge in two of the three races.

The MSVT Team Trophy, the ideal race series for those transitioning from track days to full on competition had 32 cars going out to qualify on Sunday morning and there is always a broad range of machinery competing out on track. Four classes make up the grid, all based on the individual cars ‘power to weight ratio per ton’ ranging from 125bhp to 250bhp and as the series is based on saloon, hatchback and sports cars you could drive your car to the track, compete and drive it home.

The VAG Trophy racers fielded a 26 car grid and although there are 2 classes in the championship, wet conditions are a great leveler, qualifying saw Rob Allum getting his Mark4 1.8T into the top 10. As the racing commenced the Mark5 GTI of Michael Epps dominated group A with Allum, Culley and Mohan battling hard in the group B’s.

The Mini Challenge features the all new F56 this season and 15 are already competing in the championship, adding this purpose-built Mini racer into the mix swells a grid that includes Coopers and JCW’s, 36 cars lined up at Silverstone and the ‘sharp end’ where putting out some pretty impressive lap times.
