HSCC Brands Hatch Super Prix

Brands Hatch celebrated the Historic Sports Car Clubs Golden Jubilee last weekend (1/2 July) as drivers and spectators alike enjoyed the ‘Legends of Brands Hatch Super Prix’ on the Grand Prix circuit…

The meeting proved to be one of the clubs biggest meetings of its 50 year history which included trophies being awarded by guest of honour John Le Sage, one of the original competitors from the founding Griffiths Formula race in 1966.

Ex-Gt and well known historic racer, Michael Lyons was the man to beat over the 3 day meeting managing 4 wins in 2 very different cars. In the Super Touring Trophy, piloting a Volvo S40, Lyons found success in the Swedish racer in both races with two wins, then jumping into a F1 Surtees TS9 to win both Derek Bell Trophy races.

In the Historic F3 Championship Andrew Hibberd won three races in his Brabham BT18 then went on to win in his Lotus 22 in the the Formula Junior race for disc-braked, rear-engined cars against a very tough field. The Formula Juniors celebrated their Diamond Jubilee with 100 cars lining up to compete over the weekend and wins went to both Stuart Roach in a Alexis Mk2 and Chris Drake piloting an Elva 300.

In an AC Cobra, Leo Voyazides and Simon Hadfield powered to a solid win in the GT and Sports Car Cup, then both drivers went on to win the Pre 1980’s Endurance race in a stunning Lola T282. The team, at the helm of their Daytona Cobra Coupe, very nearly managed a 3rd win in the Guards Trophy, ultimately beaten, by a mere 4/10ths of a second by the Bartell /Grant combo in their Elva Mk7. More silverware was added by Voyazides who later went on to win, in his ford Falcon, the ByBox Historic Touring Car Championship race.

There was to be an almost ‘photo finish’ in the HSCC Historic Formula 2 FIA International Series, a mere 0.119 seconds in damp conditions as Mark Dwyer powered over the line in his March 742 with the Chevron B42 of Richard Evans in hot pursuit. On the Sunday the Chevron managed to gain a good gap securing victory for Evans.

In the Classic Formula 3 Championship, the March 783 of Valerio Leone managed double wins over a competitive field whilst in the brace of HGPCA races for Pre’66 GP cars Jon Fairley in a Brabham BT11 was on the top step. HSCC Road Sports produced some big grids and wins ultimately going to Charles Barter in a Datsun 240Z and John Davison in a Lotus Elan.

Andrew Park secured the win in the Historic FF 2000s but only by less than 1 second from URS Classic FF2000 driver Marc Mercer. Close racing continued the HSCC Classic Racing Cars as Dan Pyett beat Andy Jarvis by a mere fifth of a second.

Guards Trophy winning combo of Callum Grant and Max Bartell again took to the top podium step this time wining the Historic FF1600 race that rounded out a fantastic weekend of historic racing.
