MGCC BCV8 2016 Season Review…

Pam McCarthy MGCC BCV8 CoOrdinator fills us in on the 2016 season…

Firstly, may I thank our sponsors Watt Electrical Services Limited for their enthusiasm in 2016 and Congratulate its MD Andy Young for being the Sponsor and subsequently Win the overall BCV8 Championship in 2016.

We have had a great 2016 Season with a good turn-out at every round. We originally had thirteen rounds booked but after us arriving at Castle Combe at the end of March to a flooded track and paddock we reduced down to eleven when the meeting was abandoned. The season continued with good grids and over the year there were 45 entries for the AB class, 70 entries for the B class, 71 entries for the C class and 62 entries for the D class. Giving a total of 248 or an average of 23 entered and qualified. The total of those who actually made the race was 230 or an average of 21 so well above the MSA grid of 16, now reduced from 18 probably because quite a few Championships had been struggling to reach the 18.

Class A was renamed STANDARD and was a guide to the series for a standard car modified to each Class AB, B, C and D.

Class AB had 9 registrations with two drivers who came out under the ‘nil points’ entry. John Wreghitt and Bob Luff came out for the full season and Simon Tinkler for ten rounds. Guy Samuels came out for one round in class AB when he had been in his Dads good books and Simon Alexander for three rounds. Mike Harris has skipped between his boat and his race car and managed five rounds and Max Cawthorn came out twice. Simon Tinkler took the Class win for the third time having some great battles with Bob Luff, John Wreghitt and Mike Harris. Most out at any one time was 6.

Class B Up on numbers with 20 Registrations, a few of them being second registrations as some have extra cars available but 16 coming out to race. Ben Tovey took the Class Win and he and Howard Grundon did the full Season and Steve McKie did all but one round. The remaining entrants did varying numbers of rounds. Babak Farsian completed eight rounds which was enough to take second in the class. Mark Scott came out half way through the season for six rounds, Ron Watt and Guy Samuels did four rounds each and Simon Cripps and Angus Dent did three. Paul Linfield and Chris Kerr managed two rounds and finally Brian Smethurst came out once deciding that he had come to the end of his racing career and would sell the car at the end of the Season. Most out at any one time was 8.

Class C Also up on last year with 13 Registrations and twelve drivers coming out at some point. Andy Young and Jim Bryan did the full season and Andy took the class win. Jordan Spencer did ten rounds Jonnie Wheeler did eight and Ron Watt and Paul Khouri did seven both having a few issues with their cars. New to the Championship Oliver Wardle came out at the end of the Season competing in four rounds and doing well while Paul Linfield managed three rounds with terminal problems and Ken Deamer, John Yea and Paul Rayment managed three rounds each. Barry Holmes came out for a jolly at Snetterton and most out at any one time was ten at the last round of the Season at Snetterton.

Class D We had 8 Registrations and seven came out to race. Spencer McCarthy registering but also competing in the Classic Clubman’s Championship and every round clashed with BCV8. The magnificent seven gave a fantastic showing but the season was dominated by James Wheeler who had finally got himself an ‘engine’ that worked. The Season culminated in James taking the class win. James, Russell McCarthy and Neil Fowler completed every round and came second and third in class. Rob Spencer missed a couple of rounds competing with his Bugatti. Ollie Neaves had a terrible season with engine problems for half of it and sold his car. Simon Cripps managed six rounds before deciding that the car didn’t like him and brought out his B class car. Ian Prior found the wall at Rockingham first round and came back out in a beautiful remodelled green V8 at Cadwell. Most out at any one time was 6.

In 2016 we had 51 Registered drivers but only 37 paying the full Registration fee. The remaining registrations having more than one car or being a one off entry.

2017 Draft Calendar

Following a review of the provisional list 2017 BCV8 would have all double headers. Included in three of the events, Donington, Silverstone and Snetterton all with MGCC would be the Thoroughbred entries with a split grid and maybe a 20-30 second gap depending on the circuit. Points would only be awarded for one Championship in the race so BCV8 Registered drivers would not gain any points in Thoroughbreds.

9th April – Donington MGCC

29th April – Donington MCGC

29th April – Brands Hatch MGCC

27th & 28th May – Croft 750MC

17TH June – Silverstone GP MGCC (Provisional)

29th July – Cadwell Park MGCC

2ND Sept – Oulton Park International MGCC

30th Sept – Snetterton 200
