BTCC Donington

Leicestershire’s legendary Donington Park welcomed the BTCC teams last weekend and with support races from the Clio sport, Ginetta’s, Formula 4 and the Porsche Carrera championship…

Practice consisted of two sessions and then it was on to a qualifying session which after a thrilling session Sutton driving the BMR Subaru qualified first but after some irregularities were found with the car ended up starting from the back of the grid in race one.

After a thrilling race, Aiden Moffat claimed the podium top step for the Laser Mercedes team, a great achievement for the young driver and this experience will only help develop further as a driver.

Race two was also edge of your seat stuff with Moffat getting a great start, but Tom Ingram finally caught him and made a successful pass to take the lead which he managed to hang on to till the end of the race.

Race three came and with rain which was forecasted for all day Sunday but as it fell from the sky conditions got slippery fast causing Matt Neal to journey into the gravel at the bottom of crainer curves later retiring. With so any drivers suffering from serious aqua-plaining happening the officials dropped the red flag halting the race until the rain passed giving the teams time to fettle changes with the cars.

After a 30mins delay the race restarted and for the first few laps David Newsham, Norlin Chevrolet, settled into the lead to great delight of the fans as he makes his full time return to BTCC this season and to be in the lead in only the second meeting was popular with the crowds. With the slippery conditions remaining for the first few laps before a dry line started to appear and Honda’s Gordon Sheddon was at the front and opened up a comfortable lead securing the win but after irregularities were found with his car Colin Turkinton was awarded the win, the first for the former champ of the season.

Are thoughts are with F4 racer Billy Monger who was badly injured at the meeting- Ed.

Full results and times can be found here.
