Walter Hayes Trophy 2017

Michael Moyers claimed a maiden Walter Hayes Trophy victory after a pulsating Grand Final race at Silverstone last weekend…

Following two days of heats and semi-finals, the last Fomula Ford race of the year turned into a sensational slipstreaming battle around the fast Silverstone National circuit.

Moyers started the final from third place on the grid, and kept a watching brief behind early leader Joey Foster and Josh Fisher, before moving up to second place at Brooklands.

Foster then slowed at Copse and dropped down the order, leaving a charging Oliver Fisher in the lead with Fisher tucked right under his gearbox. White came under intense pressure from Fisher, who mounted a series of attacks into Brooklands lap after lap. Perhaps inevitably, the pair touched on the penultimate lap, forcing White out of the race and allowing Moyers to move ahead of Fisher’s damaged car to take victory by 0.256 seconds. James Raven completed the podium.

Richard Tarling took a hard fought victory in the Historic Formula Ford Final, crossing the line just 0.174 seconds ahead of Michael Mallock. Mallock was just 22 hundredths of a second ahead of Ben Mitchell after 12 laps of racing, meaning the top three were covered by well under half a second.

Top billing among the support races went to the traditional Silverstone All-Comers race, where spectators were treated to the glorious sight and sound of three V10 powered Le Mans Prototypes howling around the circuit. Martin Short emerged victorious in his Dallara LMP900, ahead of the similar car of James Cottingham. Jack Dex took the final step of the podium in his Creation CA07-AIM.

Sarah Moore took victory by a lap in the Ladies All-Comers Race, while the Ferrari 458 GTE pairing of Ross Wylie and Witt Gamski emerged victorious from a thin Britcar field in the night race at the end of the day.
