Classic & Vintage and Jim Thomson Hillclimb Weekend 2018

The British Automobile Racing Club (BARC), Yorkshire Centre held two events over the weekend of 2nd and 3rd June for the Classic & Vintage Hillclimb and Jim Thomson Trophy Hillclimb at Harewood Speed Hillclimb…

It is hoped that after this meeting, with some good fine dry English weather, that the track can be fully resurfaced, following its postponement due to a tough winter during the off  season. This would be just in time for the MSA British Hillclimb Championship’s second visit of the season on the 8th July and drivers can expect a couple of the corners to have new curbs already installed.

Saturday was for the Classic and Vintage Hillclimb with competitors driving Pre War Austin 7’s, classic Bentley’s and Jaguars and a large field of vintage road and racing cars. We had two practice runs followed by two timed runs which was managed by most competitors. The rain was still well and truly with us until well after the lunch break, making for some very changeling conditions on and off track.

What a contrast on Sunday morning, not only in terms of the type of cars competing on track but also the weather conditions – no rain, albeit a little cloudy but there was some sunshine appearing occasionally throughout the day.

After the two practice runs and a timed run before the lunch break,  the BARC Yorkshire Centre managed a further two-timed runs for the competitors in the afternoon.

Joining the regular drivers from the Harewood Speed Hillclimb Championship, were competitors from Morgan Sports Car Club, the TR Register Cars and Aston Martin Owners Club Speed Series.

In the Harewood Speed Hillclimb Championship after two rounds, Gordon Riley (Toyota Starlet) still leads on 38.63 points, Sarah Bosworth (Lotus Elise) has moved up to second on 38.49 points, while Deryck Jones (Peugeot 205 GTi) has slipped to third on 38.00 points, with James Kerr in fourth (Peugeot 205 GTi), Ian Butcher fifth (Honda Integra) and Will Roberts sixth (Renault Clio).

Dave Banner (OMS 28) still leads the Harewood FTD Championship on twenty points from Ed Carter (Force PT) on eighteen, Ben Tranter (OMS 2000M) on fifteen points and his co driver Rob Spedding on eleven.

Many thanks to BARC Yorkshire centre at Harewood Hill and not forgetting all the marshals and rescue teams.
