Greenwood Cup & Mike Wilson Hillclimb – Harewood

The British Automobile Racing Club (BARC), Yorkshire Centre held two events over the weekend of 15th and 16th September; The Greenwood Cup Hillclimb and Mike Wilson Hillclimb at Harewood Hillclimb – the final meetings as the 2018 season draws to a close…

Joining the regulars from the Harewood Speed Hillclimb Championship this time were competitors from the MG Car Club, Club Alpine Renault and 500 Owners Club. The Club’s roots can be traced back to 1946 and was formed to allow enthusiasts to go racing using 500cc motorbike engines in single seater racing cars the formula was adopted in 1950 into Formula 3.

Saturday was for the Greenwood Cup with two practice runs followed by three time runs under cloudy conditions, with a number of competitors setting ‘PB’s’ and class records falling throughout the day. Not forgetting the battle for the Harewood Championship and the FTD Championship was still to be settled…

Looking at the weather forecast for Sunday it looked like heavy rain, however this proved thankfully wrong only some drizzle during the morning. With dark clouds having been blown over the hill, the sun popped out just for a while. After the two practice runs the organisers managed to get four timed runs in, despite the first car up completely taking out the timing equipment at the finish line. This resulted in a short delay while new equipment was sourced !

In the Harewood Speed Hillclimb Championship, Deryck Jones (Peugeot 205 GTi. No: 81) won the 2018 title from 2017 Champion Sarah Bosworth (Lotus Elise. No: 133) who finished second and Jonathan Mounsey (Mitsubishi Evo 6. Car number 103) finishing in third place.

Dave Banner (OMS 28. No: 161) wins the Harewood FTD Championship from David Tatham (OMS Hornet. No: 156) and Ed Carter (Force PT. Unfortunately not competing this weekend) but still managed to finish third.

Many thanks to BARC Yorkshire centre at Harewood Hill and not forgetting all the marshals and rescue teams for a great season of hillclimbing and see you all again in 2019 for Practice Day on 24th March.
