Fun Cup UK Round 2 Oulton Park

DespatchBay.com emerged victorious from a thrilling four hour Fun Cup race at Oulton Park last Saturday (13th April), heading a six car battle for the lead in the closing stages.

The beautiful Cheshire circuit was bathed in some early spring sunshine, but the air temperature was cold as the cars set off for Old Hall on lap one.

Truman’s Jonathan Hoad led from the start, with Charlie Kennedy and the Team Viking car of Nick Nunn. Hoad quickly set about pulling away from the pack, taking Kennedy with him as Nunn fell back into the clutches of David Denyer and Ellis Hadley in a three car scrap for third place.

The first of several safety car appearances happened on lap eight to recover the stranded Greensall Motorsport car of Ryan Lewis.

Six laps later the green flag flew, but the 2Rent Dominos car of Chris Hart and TFL’s Andrew Bentley picked up stop and go penalties, dropping them down the order just before the first pit window opened.

Colin Kingsworth took over the Truman’s car and kept the lead through the first round of pitstops, with JPR Axiametrics second and the recovering 2Rent Dominos car in third. Early front runners Viking and Kennedy Racing dropped down the order after an optimistic move from Graham Prattle at Cascades caused a collision.

The second appearance of the safety car coincided with the second pitstop window, and every car in the field stopped on the same lap. Hoad took over the Truman’s car and retained the lead, closely followed by Chris Hart, Farquini Deott in the Uvio car and Kristian Rose for JPR Axiametrics. These four cars battled it out for the lead as the halfway stage approached, but were overhauled by a charging Marcus Clutton , who took the lead in the DespatchBay.com car as the clock ticked over 2 hours.

Clutton and Hoad battled for the lead throughout the third hour, and the stage was set for a thrilling final quarter of the race. After the final round of pitstops and the fifth appearance of the safety car, there were just 16 minutes left on the clock as the race went green again. Marcus Clutton had a titanic scrap with Fabio Randaccio in the Uvio Car, with Kristian Rose in third. The top six cars were covered by just 1.2 seconds with eight minutes to go, but inevitably it couldn’t last. Into Old Hall for the 115th time, Randaccio ran wide after challenging Clutton for the lead. Rose was left with nowhere to go and hit the back of the Uvio car, before spinning into the barriers on the inside of the circuit. The damage to the rear of the Uvio car gave victory to the DespatchBay.com team, with Randaccio just holding off a charging 2Rent Dominos team to take second, with FNS in fourth. JPR GT Radial and Track Focused completed the top six, with a great drive from John King with Chis and Ed Bridle taking seventh place for Team 7 Fun Bikes.
