Yorkshire Speed & Montague Burton at Harewood

The Yorkshire Centre of the British Automobile Racing Club (BARC), organised the Yorkshire Speed Hillclimb meeting on Saturday 3rd August and on the Sunday the Montague Burton. Both meetings are rounds of the Harewood Speed Hillclimb Championship and its ‘Fast Time of the Day Championship’ (FTD) – a full entry-list of 150 cars were due to start on both days.

An early morning mist greeted the competitors on Saturday, but the sun did manage to break though the clouds and temperatures managed to climb up into the mid twenties, helping a number of competitors to set ‘PB’s’ on the Yorkshire hill and also a number of class records fell.

The 2018 Harewood Speed Hillclimb Champion Deryck Jones, driving his faithful Peugeot 205 Gti car number 104 still leads, with Jonathan Mounsey Mitsubishi Evo VI (no. 26) moving up to second. Kieran O’Brien Nissan 350Z, car number 118 drops down to third and Ian Butcher Honda Integra (no. 103) is still in fourth place.

In the Harewood FTD Championship Ben Tranter, OMS 2000M, car number 863 still leads on 44 points from Ed Carter, Force PT car number 162 on 37 points with Rob Spedding, OMS 2000M car number 163 in third on 31 points (Rob shares the car with Ben). The title of this championship seems to be between these three, as fourth place is a distant Ben Lovell in his OMS SC4CF (no. 155) on 17 points (Ben has missed a couple of events) but with three rounds still to go.

Sunday morning had two practice runs and due to a yellow warning issued by the met office for thunder and heavy rain in the area during the afternoon, the organisers took the decision to go with a timed run before a late lunch break.

Unfortunately about three quarters of the way though this timed run the Montague Burton meeting was abandoned due to damage caused to one of the farm buildings.

A statement from the BARC Yorkshire Centre organisers was issued later on Sunday afternoon. “The Montague Burton Trophy Hillclimb was abandoned part way through the first timed run due to the structural damage caused to a building adjacent to the course. The extent of this damage coupled with the danger of imminent collapse was such that it was deemed unsafe to continue the event”

Next meeting is the Summer meeting due to take place on 25th August.

Many thanks to BARC Yorkshire centre at Harewood Hill and not forgetting all the Marshals, Medical and Rescue teams without which the event could not take part.
