World’s Fastest Man Set For Radical SR1 Cup Debut

Wing Commander Andy Green, the fastest man in the world  – the current holder of the World Land Speed Record and driver for the rapidly-developing BLOODHOUND SSC supersonic car project joins the Radical SR1 Cup grid for the 2014 season.

Green was the first person to break the sound barrier on land in 1997, and will use the experience and skills gained during his 2014 season in the fast-and-furious SR1 Cup to hone his reactions for a 1,000mph record attempt at the controls of BLOODHOUND SSC. The 51-year-old fighter pilot joins a 20-strong grid of SR1 Cup racers and Radical say that only a few places remain currently  – the inaugural 2013 season was a fine example of close racing in this one make series.

The fastest man in the world enjoyed his first taste of competing in a Radical as he took part in a one off SR3 RS race in 2012 and is relishing the chance to get back in the driving seat of a race car, having never contested a full season of motorsport. The delicate motor skills and quick reflexes needed to pilot a race car at high speeds  (or fighter aircraft at even higher speeds!) are the same required to pilot BLOODHOUND SSC on its way to a new World Land Speed Record.

Andy Green said “I can’t wait to get started in the SR1 Cup, as this is a perfect way to keep my driving reflexes sharp. The cars may be a little slower than the 1,000mph we are working to achieve with Bloodhound SSC, but the way the SR1 behaves at different speeds is still very relevant. Over the past two years I have spent some time in a Radical SR3 RS, including racing one with journalist Chris Harris in 2012. The Radicals are brilliant race cars, where you can feel every change that you need to make to the set-up, another key skill I’m going to need up ahead. Some say it’s not possible to train for 1,000mph, but I disagree. You can do a huge amount to prepare yourself for all aspects of the challenge, and getting to grips with the SR1 is a great way for me to do that.”

Many thanks to Radical Sports Cars & Paddock42 wish Andy the very best of luck with this coming season and Bloodhound SSC.
