Meadows and Webster set early Carrera Cup GB pace

Michael Meadows put down the first marker for the 2014 Porsche Carrera Cup GB when he headed the times during the pre-season test and media day at Silverstone on Tuesday this week. At the start of his bid to earn a record-breaking third championship title, Meadows ended the day fastest as his Redline Racing team mate Josh Webster set a tremendous second best time on his first day of testing in a Porsche.

For the teams and drivers this was the first chance to run the stunning new Type-991 911 GT3 Cup and the morning session was spent running the cars in. In the afternoon the times tumbled, although a number of cars did not have transponders fitted so did not have times recorded. However, it was generally acknowledged that 2012/13 champion Meadows set the standard at 55.810s. That time was more than a second inside the existing lap record and was also quicker than Nick Tandy’s qualifying record for the Silverstone National circuit set in 2011.

Meadows was confident that there was more time to come as the teams continue testing programmes over the balance and this week and in the run-up to the opening races at Brands Hatch (29/30 March). “It’s a good start and the car has run strongly,” said Meadows. “I’m very happy with the way the car is going. We were really just shaking it down and it is going to blow last year’s lap times away.”

To make it three current and former Carrera Cup Scholarship drivers at the head of times, third fastest was 2012/13 Scholar Dan Lloyd who was helping Porsche Cars GB with the on-going programme with the new car.

In Pro-Am1, Karl Leonard (Team Parker Racing) set a strong pace to lap within half a second of Meadows’ best time, while Pro-Am2 is shaping up for an excellent season as Peter Kyle-Henney (Parr Motorsport) set the best recorded time. Ranged against him during the test day were Will Goff (In2 Racing) and Steven Liquorish (Team Parker Racing). Both Leonard and Kyle-Henney lapped more than a second beneath the existing category lap records.

The 2014 Carrera Cup GB schedule includes a sensational date on the morning of the Le Mans 24-hour when it runs alongside the Carrera Cup France as the key support race to the famous 24-hour marathon. The balance of the season will, as is customary, support the MSA British Touring Car Championship.
