Paul Rees signs for Carrera Cup GB with In2 Racing

Former single-seater racer Paul Rees is the latest high-profile driver to confirm plans to contest the 2014 Porsche Carrera Cup GB. Rees will spearhead the In2 Racing squad as he makes a move into sports and GT racing.

Rees (27) progressed up the single-seater ladder from Formula BMW into Formula Renault, Formula Palmer Audi and then into the FIA Formula 2 Championship in 2010. He has not raced regularly for several seasons and didn’t race at all in 2013 while concentrating on his work as a road car development driver.

“I had a great opportunity to come back to racing, and sports and GT racing is now my career focus,” said the Oxford-based driver. “I want to make my mark in the Carrera Cup and I want to challenge Michael Meadows. He’s going to be the man to beat and it is great to have a benchmark like Michael.”

Rees will head the In2 Racing team as it mounts a very strong challenge and he will work on data with the team’s other drivers, including Will Goff. “In2 is a really dedicated team,” said Rees, who had a brief run in Goff’s car during the championship media day at Silverstone (18 March). “Everything has come together and I’m very excited: it’s a great package” he said. In the six laps I did at Silverstone on Tuesday I was on the pace. I’m looking forward to taking the fight to Redline Racing.”

Rees had previously done some testing in the previous generation 911 GT3 Cup and says he is keen to add some Porsche Supercup races to his schedule for the coming season. He hopes to step up to the F1-support race series in 2015. Backing for the programme comes from Steria, Ardencom and Optimax.

Team boss Nick Dudfield is delighted to have signed a Pro category driver for his team. “Paul will be an asset to the team and will enable us to push the team forwards,” said Dudfield.

Other news includes the addition of rolling starts for this season, in each of the race weekends supporting the MSA British Touring Car Championship, the second race of the weekend will feature a rolling start. The weekend’s first race will continue to have a traditional standing start.

The development is primarily to prepare drivers for the high-profile race at Le Mans in June, when the Carrera Cup GB will link with the Carrera Cup France for a race on Saturday morning (14 June) ahead of the start of the world-famous 24-hour race. The Le Mans race will be from a rolling start.

“We wanted to make sure our drivers were ready for the Le Mans race, so we have introduced rolling starts for the second race of all our BTCC weekends,” said Marion Barnaby, motor sport manager at Porsche Cars GB. “For any driver aiming at a career in sports and GT racing, mastering rolling starts is an important part of their development, so this change has a double benefit for our drivers.”

The Carrera Cup GB has only once before featured a rolling start when it was part of the Porsche Carrera World Cup at the Nurburgring in 2011. The championship’s first rolling start in the UK will be in round two at Brands Hatch on Sunday 30 March.
