MX-5 SuperCup Results Cadwell Park

The MX-5 SuperCup tackled the famous Cadwell Park last weekend, it was the drivers first triple-header of the year, with one race on Saturday afternoon and two races on Sunday….Words by Team Paddock42’s David Chapman.

The grid for race 1 was slightly shaken up as we had a damp qualifying and the track was only dry for the last 2 minutes of the session. Tom Roche and Matt Davies managed to make use of the best conditions, but everyone else had their laps spoiled – Mike Comber crashed at the last corner, and myself and Abbie Eaton hit traffic.

Race 1 was fully dry but cold. The lack of grip caught out a lot of drivers – Abbie Eaton, Clint Bardwell and I all went off-track in the early laps. Tom Roche and Mike Comber stretched a gap on the battle for 3rd which consisted of Matt Davies, Liam Murphy, Paul Sheard and me. About half way into the race, Paul spun off at the final corner and I had to come to a complete stop to avoid him, which left me in a lonely 5th until the end of the race. Mike Comber took an easy win after Tom Roche crashed at Charlie’s.

Race 2 on Sunday morning was damp with some light rain at the start, which meant most drivers put their wet tyres on. However, it dried out by half way through and my tyres overheated. I’d been maintaining 2nd place just behind Mike Comber but as I lost grip he increased his lead to take another win.

In the final race of the day we made some changes to the setup which helped massively. I tucked in behind Mike straight away and we left everyone else behind. Both of us were running at lap record pace and while I was faster than him in certain parts of the track it wasn’t enough for me to get past. The old lap record was 1:44.0, but the upgrades to the cars this year gained us almost 2 seconds per lap. In the last couple of laps my tyres started to overheat again and as we came to the Mountain for the last time I had a massive slide which put me onto the grass and allowed Mike to take his third win of the weekend.

I’m now 7 points behind Mike in the championship, as we’re now allowed to drop our 3 lowest scores.
