World Time Attack Challenge Sydney Motorsport Park

Sydney Motorsport Park welcomed the 8th annual World Time Attack Challenge. Cooler track temperatures on the first day of racing saw Garth Walden in his Tilton Interiors Mitsubishi Evolution 9 set the fastest time in the pro class: 1:25.090.

Due to a number of red flags, the team was not able to better this time. The commencement of the second day of racing saw the air temperature rise to 36 degrees Celsius, with the track temperature hitting just under the 60 degree mark. These extreme temperatures saw a number of teams pull out with engine troubles, these teams were added to the list of the previous days pullouts due to major engine trouble and fire. As the temperatures dropped Garth Walden piloted his Evo 9 into the record books, shaving 1.1 seconds off his record from the previous year with a lap time of 1:23.77 which is not only a WTAC record, but a Sydney Motorsport Park record. Shane Van Gisbergen improved his PB by half a second, not enough to challenge the newly reining champions.

Torrential rain saw a hefty delay to the pro and pro-am shootout. Only 2 of 11 drivers headed out onto the slippery track for the pro shootout, Garth Walden and Shane Van Gisbergen. There was no record breaking lap times, but there was a lot of fun with both drivers entering the apex of most corners sideways.
