The Clio Cup Juniors UK Championships 2017 Results

The Renault Clio Cup Juniors championships is for teenagers ages 14-17 to show off their amazing racing talent. The first ever junior championships started off in September and finished on the 19th November.

With free registration, live coverage on ITV4 and £18,000 up for grabs the Renault UK Clio Cup has inspired young drivers to really battle it out on the racetrack. The championships consisted of an 8 exciting rounds of racing over 4 weekends, racing at 3 well-known tracks across the UK; Snetterton, Brands Hatch and Pembrey.

The drivers drove an identical version of the senior’s race car but limited to 5 gears and 100mph.

The Top 3 Results

1st Place: Jack Young, MRM: 165 Points

2nd Place: Ethan Hammeton, JamSport Racing: 159 Points

3rd Place: Max Morzorati, Team Pyro: 153 Points

Max Morzorati was sponsored by Renault Retail and drove his way to success in the first race setting the fastest lap record at Snetterton with a lap time of 2m, 20.027s. Max had his ups and downs throughout the races but was content with the outcome.

“I’m so happy – this is a brilliant feeling. I had a poor start and that left me thinking that a podium would be a good result. But there was a lot going on and I just remained consistent and pounced when the opportunity presented itself.”

After the picking up some damage in the first race, Ethan Hammerton kept his head and powered through to win Round 2 picking up fastest lap of the day with a lap time of 2m, 20.675s. He continued climbing the leader board throughout the remainder of the rounds allowing him to place 2nd overall.

Jack Young, the winner of the Renault Clio Cup Juniors Championship had a disappointing first race finishing 5th. After fighting for the win against Ethan Hammerton, earlier on in the season Jack said

“We were battling with some understeer and I think my experience in the wet weather showed a little. I’m still happy to come away with a podium though and I think we have shown we’ve got the pace to run at the front going forward.”

Jack continued to show his skill throughout the championships despite picking up grid penalties in the final rounds, which he said wouldn’t have an effect on his performance and he proved it!

Young was overwhelmed by his win and extremely happy with his overall performance stating

“The feeling is indescribable – I had a bit of a moment there with Max at the start of race two and then went off on some oil and thought it was all over. All I could do was charge as hard as possible and make clean moves on people as soon as I got up to them.”

Championship Highlights

With lots happening throughout the races, position changes, side by side racing and a few shunts, each circuit had their own thrilling moments, but we think it was Snetterton that provided the most thrills with the top 4 drivers all crossing the finish line within a second of each other.

Ethan Hammerton who finished in second place overall, ended up leaving the first ever race early because of the damage to his car. Oil spills on the track added some dramas with a few close shaves to avoid it!

Overall the championship was a great success and a great showcase for young, British racing talent and of course those peppy little Renault Clios!
