Les Leston Tracksac…Historica Racewear

The new ‘Les Leston’ range will soon be arriving at Historica and Paddock42 have been lucky enough to get our hands on one of the new ‘Tracksac’ race kit/ weekend bags.

Perry Smith has been involved in Historic Motorsport for many years and branched out into providing specialist racing and driver accessories under the Historica brand in 2010. Historica really strive to bring the very best products to the market and invest heavily in the reproduction of designs & items that are no longer available (the Les Leston Tracksac is a great example of this) along with providing a fine range of products for both historic racers or classic drivers alike. In its day the ‘TRACKSAC’ was a mere 49/6 but todays range starts at £75 for a messenger bag, £110 for the medium holdall and £150 for the large which not only caries all your race kit to the circuit, helmet and all, but also doubles up as a cracking weekend bag.

Who was Les Leston?

Les Leston was a former racer who made it all the way to F1 making his World Championship Formula One debut in a Connaught-Alta in the Italian Grand Prix at Monza in 1956. Les would make only his second and ultimately final F1 appearance in a BRM at the British Grand Prix in 1957 –  but partnering with Roy Salvadori driving a works Aston Martin DBR1, managed sixth place in the Le Mans 24 Hours that same year. Following a massive accident in Lotus 12 in the 1958 Caen Grand Prix he decided to race less and concentrate on his business interests and ‘Les Leston Ltd’ in High Holborn, London, was the end result. Although he took a step back from racing he still competed in major rallies and regularly raced both a Riley 1.5 and a Volvo Amazon in the British Saloon Car Championship but it was behind the wheel of a Lotus Elite that he became best known, regularly winning throughout 1961 & 1962 seasons. Les Leston Ltd initially specialised in selling purely car accessories and polishes but ultimately became internationally renowned for its fireproof overalls, helmets and steering wheels. Interestingly Les was instrumental in the adoption and development of many of the safety improvements first seen during the 60’s including the mandatory use of fireproof suits & crash helmets in all forms of motorsport.

Looking for a retro leather weekend bag, new approved race overalls, and new pair of vintage style (FIA approved) race boots for this years ‘Revival’? Contact Perry at Hisorica Racewear at info@historicaracewear.co.uk or check out www.historicaracewear.com
