MSVR Meeting, Oulton Park, 15th June

The headline Radical Feature Race delivered a thrilling climax to top the bill of a great day of MSVR club racing at Oulton Park.

With the race scheduled to last 90 minutes, strategy was always going to play a part in determining the winner, and so it proved. With the faster SR8 class cars needing to refuel, and the SR3’s only needing to change drivers to cover the distance, the stage was set for a dramtic climax. Eventual winners Chris Hyman and Alex Mortimer fought back from a lap down with 30 minutes to go to snatch an unlikely victory.

The SR8’s lead into Old Hall, with the car of Mark Smithson and Christian Kronegard leading early on before mechanical issues put paid to their charge. This left Marcelo Marateotto leading in the car he shared with sportscar veteran Martin Short as the pitstops approached. The need for the faster cars to refuel turned the race on its head, handing the slower SR3s a huge advantage. For much of the second half of the race, it looked like the #77 Lewis Plato / Bradley Smith SR3 had the race sewn up, but a late technical glitch allowed the Broadhurst/Ashton SR3 to take the lead. Behind, Alex Mortimer was on a storming recovery drive, taking seconds out of the slower cars ahead every lap. Mortimer eventually re-took the lead from Broadhurst on the penultimate lap, with a delighted Martin Short completing the podium in third.

The day had started with another endurance race, this time over 75 minutes for the Lotus Cup UK runners. Steve Train came through from ninth on the grid to take victory in his Lotus 2-Eleven after a close race, with the top three covered by less than ten seconds after 36 laps of racing.

Andrew Bentley took a hard fought win the LoTRDC Elise Trophy race, spending much of the race keeping the charging Luigi Mazza at bay. Bentley earned some respite in the closing stages, with Mazza ending his race in the pitlane after a mechanical failure on his Lotus. James Littlejohn had fought for the lead in the early stages of the race, before dropping back to finish second, with Martin Wills completing the podium.

The Project 8 Racing Saloons field provided two entertaining races, with Stephen Pearson beating Adam Sharpe by just half a second in the day’s opening encounter. The result was reversed in an even closer second race, with Sharpe taking the win from Pearson by just 0.354 seconds.
