Pikes Peek 2013… For The Brave.

The 2013 Pikes Peek event starts 30th June and the infamous US Hill climb draws drivers from all over the globe who want to conquer the 14,110 foot mountain.

From its discovery in 1806 by Lt. Zebulon Pike to the first race held in August 1916, an event devised by Spencer Penrose, one of Colorado Springs’ city’s major benefactors, the peek has become possibly the most famous hill climb in the world.

Penrose built the original road, and through the years the road was widened and some sections paved but only in 2011 was the whole road fully paved. Besides the now-completed paving, the course and race format have not changed significantly from the original and drivers face one of the most grueling courses known to the world of racing.

Changing weather, starting out in sunshine, drivers can travel through sleet, thunderstorms, wind, hail, fog, or blinding snow before finishing, causing this breathtaking event to be called “The Race to the Clouds.”

The first Pikes Peak Champion was 22-year old Rea Lentz from Washington. His Romano Demon Special was the smallest car entered and he was the youngest driver. His time was 20 minutes, 55.6 seconds.  In the day first prizes ranged from $500 to $2,000 cash, again depending upon which event the driver entered. To further encourage competition Penrose offered a 43-inch trophy covered in Colorado silver and gold, valued at $10,000. The winners could keep the trophy for a year.

Both cars and bikes tackle the challenge with 2-wheeled Pikes Peek legend, Davey Durelle of Elizabeth, Colorado, winning 14 times on the mountain. Brothers Greg and Gary Tracy have won 14 titles on their bikes alone and Ducati’s Carlin Dunne set the course mark of 9:52.819 last summer.

The list of champions includes famed competitors like Louis Unser, Al Rogers, Bobby Unser, Mario Andretti, Roger Mears, Al Unser, Wally and Paul Dallenbach, Eddie Mulder and Bobby Donner.

The Pikes Peak International Hill Climb is the second oldest motorsports race in America and a long-standing tradition in Colorado Springs and the Pikes Peak Region. The race is run on a 12.42 mile (and now fully-paved) course with 156 turns that begins at 9,390 feet and finishes at the 14,110 foot summit of America’s Mountain.

This year rally legend Sebastian Loeb tackles the mountain in a very special Peugeot built for the event:
