Robin Bark Motor Art

Paddock42 has bumped into Robin Bark at various motorsport and classic car shows over the last few months and following a catch up at Essen we are delighted to highlight some of his current work.

Robin started his career in motorsport poster design but later studied ceramic sculpture at Goldsmiths in London. Initially he spent time as a freelance designer, taking on private commissions for motoring sculptures but he later switched to teaching design for a number of years in schools, colleges & universities. When Robin first started producing, he cast aluminum sculptures at home before turning to a traditional foundry that specialises in producing vintage race parts. The process would start by sculpting clay and from this making a master pattern in a more resistant material. This pattern is then used to make a sand mould into which the molten aluminum is poured. Once broken out of the mould, the pieces are fettled and then polished to a high lustre. Each piece is signed and numbered and presented in a bespoke wooden box.

Following some time away from the brush, Robin started to paint again and found his style had evolved and developed into a minimalist ‘screen print’ style that reflects his time as a poster artist, Robin tries to achieve a sense of speed and dynamism and to reach the essence of the subject by removing all but the essential detail.

Interestingly Robin has only been showing his work for the last 18 months and has already gained a worldwide audience and even Sir Stirling Moss has a Mercedes-Benz 300 SLR made by Robin on display in his office!
