Carrera Cup GB and GT3 Cup winners celebrated

Carrera Cup GB and GT3 Cup – The winning teams and drivers from the 2013 Porsche Carrera Cup GB and Porsche GT3 Cup Challenge GB were celebrated during the annual awards evening at the Savill Court Hotel last weekend.

Over 200 guests were present to celebrate the 2013 season in style as overall champions Michael Meadows and Justin Sherwood won the major prizes. Carrera Cup champion Meadows and GT3 Cup Challenge champion Sherwood were among four winners to take away road-going Porsches as part of their prize package. Meadows, Victor Jimenez (Pro-Am1 champion) and Paul Mace (from team champions Samsung Smart Motorsport) all drove away in brand new 911s, while Sherwood collected a Cayman S as his prize. All four winners will have the use of their cars for a year.

Other drivers from the Carrera Cup GB to collect a share of over £60,000 in end-of-season prize money included Jonas Gelzinis, Rory Butcher, Dan De Zille, George Brewster and Peter Smallwood. Jimenez was announced as the ‘most improved driver of the season’.

Meanwhile, Steven Liquorish and Kelvin Fletcher joined Sherwood in being applauded for their success in the GT3 Cup Challenge. Team Parker Racing collected the team award for the GT3 Cup Challenge and a cheque for £5000.

Michael Meadows (overall Carrera Cup champion) – ““It’s been a great season. I think I drove better this year and I had to go out and fight hard. I really enjoyed every minute of it and it’s brilliant to have a 911 road car for another year”.”

Victor Jimenez (Carrera Cup Pro-Am1 champion) – “I am very pleased and I hope to continue racing in the Carrera Cup GB with Redline Racing. Winning the award for the most improved driver is very special for me”.”

Paul Mace (team manager Samsung Smart Motorsport) – “We performed on all levels and ticked all the boxes. I hope it will happen again in 2014”.”

Finally, the BARC Marshals’ Fund benefited by over £1600 from the raffle organised during the evening.

Further Porsche news – Porsche GT3 Cup Challenge GB not to run in 2014

Following extended discussions with teams and drivers, Porsche Cars GB has confirmed that the Porsche GT3 Cup Challenge GB will not run in 2014.

The GT3 Cup Challenge GB was created to offer a stepping stone for drivers aiming to graduate to the Carrera Cup GB and mirrored similar series organised in a number of countries. It also provided a viable place for former Carrera Cup cars to race.

The series has been successful in introducing a number of new drivers into Porsche motor sport and at least two of the leading GT3 Cup Challenge contenders from 2013 are now finalising plans to step up to the Carrera Cup GB in 2014.

Marion Barnaby Motor Sport manager at Porsche Cars GB said –  ““This is not a decision we have taken lightly, however, we are now concentrating on new projects for 2014 with the introduction of the new 991-model 911 GT3 Cup into the Carrera Cup GB and the very high-profile support race at the Le Mans 24-hours.”

Porsche Cars GB has confirmed that it will be honouring its promise to allow previously championship-registered 911 GT3 Cup cars and drivers to compete in the Le Mans 24-hours support race in 2014.
