New ACU Road Race Licence Changes for 2014

News from the ACU for the 2014 season with regards to a new ACU Road Race Licence (ride solo or drive a sidecar), new racers will have to undergo a test to prove they could ride a motorcycle in a competition/ track environment.

2003 saw the introduction of the Compulsory Training Course which is a classroom based course but up till now if you have a DVLA Class A road licence or had adult racing experience (e.g. Supermoto, Motocross) you were good to go. But in this world of litigation, circuits, instructors and clubs have raised concerns and it was agreed with the ACU Road Race Committee that changes were needed.

So in short the theory based Compulsory Training Course will have some updating before the end of 2013 but will remain as is but every applicant will now have to undergo the Basic Rider Assessment to prove that they are able to ride a motorcycle on the race track in an appropriate manner. Interestingly a full race start procedure will be included as part of the on track assessment which is a great idea.

Circuits throughout the UK will host this new track test, it will take around 60 to 90 minutes, depending on the numbers attending the day and includes riding skill tutor / assessment sessions. Most of the day will be on track but will also include off-track basic machine control skills for less experienced and  junior riders – all tests will be conducted by ACU approved coaches.

Thoughts are that many Road Race Clubs will work together before the start of the 2014 season, to make the rider ability test available at as many venues as possible. Most organisers will provide the basic theory CTC and Basic Rider Assessment as part of a single day – many of the clubs/ track day organisers do this already.

Road Race Chairman, Paul King commented, “since the Compulsory Training Course was introduced during 2003, it is understood that the number of accidents involving newcomers to Road Racing, in their first few races, has fallen significantly and it is felt that this extension to the scheme will have a similar result. The aim is also to make going racing for the first time an easier and less stressful undertaking.”

Further information can be obtained from the ACU. Many thanks to Racing Line Photography.
