Classic Sports Car Club, Oulton Park, 27th September

Classic Sports Car Club – Paul Sibley took a brace of Special Saloons and Modsports victories at Oulton Park on Saturday, following the retirement of pole sitter Andy Southcott on lap one of the opening race.

Sibley had qualified his red Lotus Elan second on the grid, sandwiched between Andy Southcott’s MG Midget, and the flame spitting Porsche 935 replica of Mark Ticehurst. The Porsche never made the grid with a gearbox failure, and with Southcott failing to complete a lap, the way was clear for Sibley to take a lights to flag victory over the turbocharged Peugeot 309 of Danny Morris. Behind the two leaders, Steven Moss used his nimble Ford Anglia replica to hold off the thunderous 6-litre Vauxhall Carlton of Peter Stevens.

Race two unfolded in a similar manner to race one, with Paul Sibley charging to victory by almost of ten seconds. Steven Moss took second in his Anglia, with the Peugeot 309, now driven by Ricky Parker-Morris, completing the podium. Peter Stevens again finished fourth in the ex-works Vauxhall Carlton.

The Future Classics 40 minute race had to be run in two parts, after a massive engine failure for early leader Alec Livesley spread oil all over Island Bend and the Shell Oils hairpin. Nicholas Olsen spun his Lotus Esprit hard into the barriers on the oil slick, bringing out the red flags to allow the track to be cleaned up. The race was restarted as a 5 lap sprint, with Darren Smith taking the spoils in his TVR Tuscan, ahead of the Vauxhall Astra duo of Hammersley and Taylor.

In the first of the day’s two Ferrari Formula Classic races, James Cartwright took the victory on track, but was handed a 10-second time penalty for jumping the start. This gave the win to David Tomlin in his 308 GTB, with Guy Culver taking the final podium spot someway behind the leading two. The result in race 2 was a carbon copy of the first, with Tomlin taking a narrow victory over James Cartwright, with Guy Culver in third.

The CSCC Swinging Sixties 40 minute mini-enduro was won the the pole sitting Ginetta G4 of Halstead and McPherson, who took victory by a massive 48 seconds over the Triumph TR6 of Christopher Edwards, with Jon Ellison taking third. The day’s other endurance race, the 60 minute Classic K encounter, was won by Andrew family Lotus Elan, with David Holroyd finishing almost 50 seconds behind in second place.
