P42 Interview – Motorsport Artist Joel Clark

We all love cars right? Well if you are reading this than the odds are that you do. If we are not building them and driving them we will probably be looking at them. Images of some of the worlds greatest machines hang in the garages, houses, offices of all of us, from the rich and famous to the rest of us. Paddock42 catches up with one of the UK’s leading motorsport artists Joel Clark.

 P42:

Joel, when did the fascination with cars start.?

JC:

I have loved cars, bikes and trucks ever since I can remember. With my father being in the haulage industry and a petrol head himself, I have been around cars and trucks since I was born. Growing up close and regularly going  to Silverstone only fueled this passion in to the obsession it is today.

P42:

Its an global obsession for sure; from peering over the fence at Silverstone how did this lead you to your work now?

JC:

Purely by chance. After finding myself in a situation where I had a window of opportunity to dedicate time to creating a collection of art work, along with finally having the idea of what to do with using vinyl, I launched my work at Kop Hill last year. Since then I have been kept in steady work with sales and commissions, along with joining the Historic Car Art Gallery I have been able to carve out a career as an Artist.

P42:

Its fantastic to be able to make a living doing something you really enjoy, what has been your favourite piece created so far?

JC:

This is usually the last piece made – one always improves and learns with each job and with such a new and unique way of working, the learning curve has been huge. If I had to pick one of my Speedicons pieces it would be the BMW M-Sport but my current favorite piece is Palm Door – one of my new vinyl sculpture pieces.

P42:

Your inspiration?

JC:

My inspiration comes from a clash of my two favorite things/interests; Cars and Art! As much as performance and noise are always a huge factor in liking a car, looks and design always take president, therefore the design of a car or the graphics of a race team will always catch my eye first and get me thinking. Inspiration, therefore genuinely comes from the most unexpected places at the most unexpected times. The biggest inspiration though, is that of following my dream and hearing those who preach the same… such as Lewis Hamilton.

P42:

Do you attend all the main shows and events?

JC:

I have attended a some shows, a few smaller local events, plus most of the big classic car events that my gallery attend.

P42:

How about private commissions?

JC:

I welcome private commissions and these have been the bulk of my income. I only require a photo of the car, so people can commission me from anywhere in the world. It’s a very enjoyable process working with clients to create art work that I may not have thought doing. Plus I get to meet fellow Petrolheads and talk cars in disturbing depth!

P42:

That sounds great, I am visualising your work hanging in our office! How about plans for the future?

JC:

My work has already taken various directions forward – since first launching 15 months ago – so have no idea where it will lead. All I can hope for is that the work keeps coming in and people keep buying my art.

P42:

So how does it work are they all limited editions or do you sell the originals?

JC:

The prints – all signed and limited to a run of 100 each – are available via Speedicons.com. For originals and commissions people can contact me directly at: jc.artist@outlook.com or visit joelclarkartist.carbonmade.com

P42:

Given the choice, and no budget what would you have parked in your garage?

JC:

D-Type Jag and Citroen Maserati  – too hard to pick just one.

P42:

Many thanks Joel good luck this year and keep us posted!
