HSCC all set for Thruxton Easter Revival

Easter weekend is always a big weekend in the motorsport calendar, launching the season for many clubs and championships and this year is no exception. The first big historic meeting of the year, Historic Sports Car Club’s Easter Revival arrives at Thruxton and with 230 registrations confirmed for this weekend’s meeting the smell of Castrol R will be in the air at the Hampshire circuit…

Thruxton has been a firm favourite with racers since 1968 and since its inception has remained largely unchanged. This weekends meeting is a 17 race event and several of the 12 grids are at or nearly at capacity, including the GT element of the Guards Trophy and the Historic Formula Ford 1600. There will be 8 races on Saturday and 9 on Sunday with plenty of double headers for the Historic Formula Ford, Historic FF 2000, Historic Touring Cars, Classic F3 and the Derek Bell Trophy.

A star car of the meeting to mention is an ex-Peter Gethin ’76 Formula 5000 Chevron B37. This car took 2nd place at Thruxton in the hands of Aussie racer Bruce Allison in 1977 and on that day managed an average lap of 119.29mph qualifying on pole (1m11.1s). The B37 can be seen running in the period livery of the VDS team and is a fitting tribute as the Chevron marque reaches its 50th anniversary this year.

The pre-72 Formula Ford 1600 grid is full to capacity and spectators will see racer and TV presenter Tiff Needell in his Lotus 69 go to battle with some tough competition including former champion Ben Mitchell and leading drivers Max Bartell and Will Nuthall.

The Derek Bell Trophy sees racer James King returning to the grid, the American driver who raced Formula Atlantic and Formula 3 in the UK some 40 years ago returns to the Hampshire track in his Formula 2 March 712. The Formula Junior’s include single-seater racer Mike Walker, who made a return to the grid in 2014 after 42 years away from the paddock. Mike has not competed at Thruxton since 1972 and will race a rare Bond Formula Junior, one of two cars ever produced, the other Bond will also be on the grid but in the hands of Andrew Tart.

Local drivers among this weekends entries are Dorchester’s Paul Tooms in a Lotus Elan and Charles Barter in a Datsun 240Z, Chippenham’s Jonathan Loader in a MGB, the De Tomaso Formula Junior of Newbury racer Chris Wilks and Peter Shaw with his Lotus Elan and TVR Tuscan from Old Basing.

Qualifying starts Saturday Morning from 9am with racing from 1pm and on Sunday qualifying from 11.45am and racing is from 12.40pm.
