BTRA Trucks return to Silverstone…

The British Truck Racing Championship returned to Silverstone after an absence of 26 years the other weekend (8th & 9th August), and what a return it was. The meeting was also supported by the Legends Car Championship and the Pickup Truck Championship which entertained the crowds with their usual bumper to bumper competitive racing.

I arrived on race day (Sunday) and there was no mixed class racing. Division 1 trucks came out first with the division 2 trucks gracing the Silverstone National Circuit 15 minutes later. This would be the format of the day with two more divisional races (at Brands Hatch there were 20 vehicles on the circuit at once), each division racing their own race trying to earn a place in the ‘Super Final’ at the end of the day when two divisions would be out on track racing hard and jostling for position together.

Entertaining racing all-round, serious door handle to door handle battles throughout the field, mix this with some hard pushed turbo diesel noise and tyre smoke and you get a real understanding what this racing is all about.

The trucks are limited to 100mph which is an unbelievable speed for something that was designed to deliver to your local supermarket or haul ‘widgets’ to keep your ale smooth up and down the country, but these monsters navigate the circuit as good as any race car.

Write this championship off at your own peril. Apart from the dodgy trucker/country music over the Silverstone intercom a fantastic day was had by all. Ye Ha.

Full results from the weekend can be found here.
