Double Win for Rea at Philip Island…

Defending champion Jonathan Rea took the double for the opening round of the 2016 Superbike World Championship at Philip Island.

Rea led for much of race 1 but was challenged all the way by Chaz Davies, Michael van der Mark and Tom Sykes including a last lap lunge by Davies to win the first Saturday race in WSBK history. Rea again won Sunday’s race. In the closing laps it was only Chaz Davies that looked like he could take the win from Rea. Davies made his move into the Honda hairpin but couldn’t get the Ducati stopped in time causing him to run wide and lose the front end. Davies managed to recover into 10th place and salvage some championship points. Nicky Hayden nearly scored a podium result on his first weekend out on the Honda CBR1000RR with a brilliant 4th place in race 2, only missing out of the podium by 0.039 of a second. Rea comes away from the weekend with a perfect score of 50 and a solid start to his championship defense with the next round of the championship moving to Thailand on the 11th-13th March.
