Masters Historic Racing 2016 champions

Masters Historic Racing is celebrating another fine season as champions are crowned in the FIA Masters Historic Formula One, FIA Masters Historic Sports Cars, Stena Line Gentlemen Drivers Pre-66 GT and Pre-66 Touring Cars…

Nick Padmore secured the FIA Masters Historic Formula One Championship driving Max Smith-Hilliard’s Williams FW07C, it was a season that achieved 12 race wins and the crown before the final two races at Jarama had taken place. Loic Deman started the season well managing two wins at Zolder, but Padmore dominated in the famous Leyland/ Saudia Air livered car. Third place fell to Greg Thornton in his Lotus 91/5 took the third step of the championship podium after a strong finish in Spain.

Seasoned modern GT and historic racer Michael Lyons won the Pre-78 division driving the family’s Hesketh 308E – an eight win season and the Fittipaldi class honours for the young driver. Max Smith-Hilliard in a Shadow DN5 and Jason Wright in aShadow DN8 were second and third. Other F1 class winners included John Delane’s Tyrrell 002 winning the Stewart class and the Lauda class was won by Ian Simmonds in a Tyrrell 012.

Keith Ahlers and Billy Bellinger in their Cooper Monaco King Cobra won the FIA Masters Historic Sports Car Championship also topping the pre-66 division, while Chevron B8 drivers and class winners, Graham Wilson and Nigel Greensall finished their season  a mere one point behind. Andrew and Mark Owen were the third place finishers with Jason Wright and Mike Donovan joint fourth driving their Lola T70 Mk3Bs in the Rodriguez class. Other class winners included Jamie Boot in a Chevron B16 who won the Siffert class, Mark Bates (911RSR) the Pescarlo class and the Marko class was won by the combo of Mark Piercy and Martin Stretton in a Lola T210.

Keith Ahlers and Billy Bellinger, this time driving a Morgan SLR also added to their silverware by winning the Stena Line Gentlemen Drivers Pre-66 GT Championship – a three point win over closest rivals Graham Wilson and Nigel Greensall who have been chasing hard all season in a Lotus Elan, the pairing did win the CLP class. The pairing of Michael Gans and Andy Wolfe took top honours in their class in an AC Cobra and Mark Ashworth piloted his TVR Grantura to a class title.

Andy Wolfe also won the Masters Pre-66 Touring Car Championship in his Lotus Cortina, a fine season with four class wins in five races enabling a championship win over Mini Copper S hard pedallers Jonathan Lewis and Ron Maydon – they tied on points for second in the championship. The Ford Mustang of Craig Davies was another class winner who also enjoyed an excellent season that included wins at Brands & Spa.

All the 2016 champions will form part of the Masters Racing new championship artwork that will be used in 2017 throughout the season.

Many thanks to Masters Historic Racing.
