BARC at Thruxton

Thruxton played host to the BARC National Championship race meeting last weekend, the last four-wheeled race meeting on Thruxton’s calendar for 2017. A wide-range of the BARC’s longest standing championships, to some of it’s most competitive all took to the track on Saturday and Sunday.

Starting with some of the smallest cars on the entry list, the Toyo Tires Pre-2005 Touring Car Championship, the Classic VW Cup and the 4Two Smart Car Cup all braved the heat of Saturday, and the downpours on Sunday to produce some great action with a huge and wide-ranging entry. Given their size, engine capacity and downright non-racer looks the Smart Cars were definitely a favourite of mine to see blasting round Thruxton in the pouring rain.

A staple of the BARC’s formulae, the King Henry’s Taverns’ Clubman Cup showcased some of the fastest and traditional cars in the BARC championship stable. The Max5 Championship features multiple generations of the MX-5, probably one of the most popular race cars with multiple championships in the UK.

Classic Touring Cars also took to Thruxton, in the Paul Inch Pre’66 Championship. The pace was set by the likes of Lotus Cortina’s and Ford Anglia’s but plenty of action to be had throughout the field filled with Mini’s and Morris Minors.

The Track Attack Championship pits all ranges of car against one another, with multiple classes of unique Track Attack cars, the field highlighted by a pair of Cosworth Powered Subaru Imprezas.

The highlight of the weekend for me was the MillTek Sport Volkswagen Racing Cup, filled with VW Golf, Scirocco’s and a pair of glourious Audi TTRS race cars, all prepared by some of the biggest race tuning teams in the UK.
