Greenwood Cup & Mike Wilson Hillclimb Weekend Harewood

The British Automobile Racing Club (BARC), Yorkshire Centre held two events at the famous Harewood hill over the weekend of 16th & 17th September, the Greenwood Cup & Mike Wilson Hillclimb…the final two meetings for the Harewood Speed Hillclimb Championships 2017 season….

Sarah Bosworth (Lotus Elise car 153) retained the Harewood Speed Hillclimb Championship from Deryck Jones (Peugeot 205 GTi car 89) and Gordon Riley (Toyota Starlet car 88).

John Chacksfield (car 206) retained the Harewood FTD (Fastest Time of the Day) Championship by just one point from Dave Banner (car 202) both in OMS 28’s with Ed Carter (Force PC car 193) in third.

Saturday’s weather was the better of the two days with competitors managing two practice runs followed by three timed runs. Sunday on the other hand was completely different matter,  a downpour half an hour before the event was due to start, meant the track very wet and competitors rushed to get wet rubber on before the first runs. Showers then continued during the first practice run and the track was still pretty damp for the start of the second practice.

The first timed runs got underway before the lunch break, but after only a dozen or so cars had got up the hill, a heavy impact with the tyre wall resulted in a delay, marshall’s got to work, track damage repaired, car recovered and the driver checked over in the ambulance meant some waiting time before competition could resume.

During lunch another heavy shower meant the wets remained on for the second timed runs, with a third run for anyone wanting to have another go up the hill in now wet conditions.

Joining the regulars from the Harewood Speed Hillclimb Championship in the paddock were various other groups of competitors driving a selection  of cars that ranged from MG’s, Alpine Renault’s and Westfields.

The 2018 seasons kicks off on 25th March with Practice Day and the nine event Championship’s meeting start on 15th April with the Spring National. The MSA British Championship Hillclimb visits Harewood Hill twice next year, with an event in May and also July.

Many thanks to BARC Yorkshire centre at Harewood Hill and not forgetting all the marshals and rescue teams.
