British GT Championship Oulton Park

British GT Championship history was made at Oulton Park on Easter Monday, as Flick Haigh became the first woman to win a British GT Championship race outright.

Sadly typically British bank holiday weather meant there would be no repeat victory later in the day, as the second GT race was abandoned due to torrential rain flooding parts of the circuit.

British GT Race 1

After becoming the first woman to ever claim a British GT pole position on Saturday, Flick Haigh and co-driver Jonny Adam converted their advantage into a commanding race win on Easter Monday. Heavy rain throughout the morning meant the race began behind the safety car, but once racing began Haigh was able to charge into a huge early lead. Jon Minshaw, starting seventh in the Demon Tweeks Lamborghini, carved through the field into second place and set about chasing down the 6.7 second gap to Haigh’s Optimum Motorsport Aston Martin.

By the time the pitstop window opened at the 25 minute mark, Minshaw had halved the gap to Haigh, and as Haigh dived into the pits to hand over to Jonny Adam, Minshaw stayed out and as a result the gap was only one second once the Lamborghini driver made his stop and handed over to Phil Keen.

Unfortunately we were robbed of a battle for the win after contact with the #34 Team HARD GT4 Ginetta resulted in a broken wheel and another pitstop for Phil Keen. Adam was then left with a stress-free run to the flag to take the win.

Behind the cruising Aston Martin, the ERC Sport Mercedes of Yelmer Buurman was chasing down second placed Darren Turner in the Beechdean AMR Aston Martin. Turner used GT4 traffic brilliant to hold off the charging Buurman, taking second place by just 0.251 seconds at the flag.

In GT4, Track-Club repeated their victory of 12 months ago, Adam Balon and Ben Barnicoat taking the flag ahead of the Century Motorsport BMW pair of Ben Tuck and Ben Green. However, a post-race penalty for a too short pitstop dropped Tuck and Green to sixth place in the final results.

This promoted the Tolman Motorsport McLaren pairing of Michael O’Brien and Charlie Fagg to second place, with the other Century Motorsport BMW of Ricki Collard and Jack Mitchell completing the GT4 podium.
