MSA British Rallycross Championship round six at Croft Circuit

The 2018 MSA British Rallycross Championship visited Croft Circuit on Sunday 29th July for its second visit of the season for round six, organised by the BARC…

The great long heat wave of 2018 came to an end with very heavy rain on Saturday and was much the same on the Sunday for race day. No longer did the organisers have to worry about watering the dirt section of the Rallycross track to keep the dust down, all this rain had sorted that well and truly out. Sunday, the rain had started before practice and continued until well after the lunch brea, a strong wind prevailed too, blowing the rain about and ultimately making for some very difficult conditions for the marshals and photographers. It wasn’t much better for the competitors during the races, with thick mud sticking to the cars reducing the vision out, for all apart from the race leaders. Though once the rain did stop, race after race the track was getting quicker and quicker. But during the various class finals the black rain clouds were blown in and once again it was raining.

Along with the main attraction of the Supercar also taking part in the event were competitors from the Supernational (inc. Super 1600’s) Junior (all driving Suzuki Swifts) BMW Mini, Swift Sport and Retro Rallycross Championships.

Each of the above different Championship classes would have three qualifying races followed by semi finals (should that class have more than eight cars) and a final for the top eight drivers.

In the Supercar class local driver Kevin Procter (Ford Fiesta) was on poll for the final but with a poor start, finished second ahead of Mark Higgins driving the Albatec Racing Peugeot 208 RX in third.

Julian Godfrey (Mitsubishi Mirage) won the final and takes over the lead of the MSA British Rallycross Championship by one point from Ollie O’Donovan who was leading the championship coming into Croft but in the Supercar final the front right suspension broke, causing him to slow but somehow managed to drag the Tony Bardy prepared Ford Focus to take sixth place.

Round seven takes place at Lydden Hill on 27th August.

Many thanks to Trevor Swettenham of the BARC, Croft Circuit and of course, not forgetting all the marshals and rescue teams without which the event could not take place.
