Historic Sports Car Club Race Weekend At Brands Hatch

The Historic Sports Car Club were at Brands Hatch at the weekend (22-23/09/2018) in what I think was possibly one of the wettest weekends of the season so far. This did not dampen (excuse the pun) the racing at all, oh no, the weather played it’s part and driver’s talent levels were dialed in, set to 11.

First on the grid (Races 1 & 7) was the HSCC/HRSR Historic Touring Car Championship. Both races ran on Saturday in wet conditions. Richard Belcher put his Ford Lotus Cortina on pole for their first outing with championship points leader Adrian Oliver on the second row in 4th. Oliver put his Imp out in front at the start and remained there for the duration with Mike Gardiner in his red and gold Ford Lotus Cortina chasing him down. Steve Platts in his Singer Chamois came home 3rd with Richard Belcher having to make do with 4th. The second race for the Historic Touring Cars was ran in much the same conditions as their first outing.  Race one winner Adrian Oliver this time round starting in pole position. Oliver’s first lap slide sent him down the field handing Steve Platts the lead. Oliver managed to fight his way back through the field into 2nd place, chasing Platts all the way to the chequered flag. Mike Gardiner this time taking the 3rd step of the podium.

Steve Platts Singer Chamois Race 7 winner.

In the Classic F3/URS Classic FF2000 races (Races 2 & 14), Chris Lord took the first win of the day in his Van Diemen RF82 and Paul Smith in the Ralt RT3 taking the win in their second outing. Conditions for race 2 were tough, the weather improving for race 14.

In the Classic Clubmans (Races 3 & 13) Mark Charteris and his Mallock Mk20/21 started from pole position and went on to win the first Clubmans race of the weekend by 24 seconds. Charteris fell behind John Harrison and his Mallock Mk21 who had a superb start from the line only to lose out  to Charteris in the latter laps. The top two results were the same for the second Clubmans race, only this time Harrison gave Charteris a run for his money to the chequered flag. Again heavy rain made race 3 tough going with things improving on Sunday.

The HSCC Historic Formula Ford Championship (Races 4 & 12), with a grid of  27 cars, Cameron Jackson and his Lola T200 took a double race win over the weekend, helping him in his fight to catch points table leader Ben Mitchell for championship honers. Both Jackson and Mitchell could only qualify on the third row with Callum Grant on pole. Jackson pushed his way into the lead within a few corners, Mitchell took 2nd place from Linton Stutley at the start of lap two. Ben Mitchell slid out of the second Historic Formula Ford race of the weekend while chasing down Jackson, making life difficult for himself in the championship standings.

Cameron Jackson Double Race Winner

The HSCC Historic Formula Ford 2000 Championship, (Races 6 & 8) Paul Allen brought his Raynard SF79 home taking his first win of the season during Saturday’s Historic FF2000 race in wet conditions while championship leader Andrew Park could could only manage 3rd, struggling with conditions on old tyres. Sunday fared better for Park in the rain, bringing  his Raynard SF81 home in 1st place.

In Sunday’s Ford Escort 50th celebration races, Daniel, Sean and Robert Brown qualified 1,2,3 and went on to take the chequered flag in that order. In the second Escort 50th race of the day, Daniel and Sean Brown finished 1st & 3rd with Steve Minton splitting the Brown’s in his Ford Escort Mk2, finishing 2nd. Robert Brown this time round finished in 4th.

In the HSCC Historic Road Sport Kevin Klvlochan brought his Morgan Plus 8 home first with a 6 second gap over championship leader John Davison in his Lotus Elan. Davison went on to win the second Historic Road Sport race and with that securing the championship.

70’s Road Sport Will Leverett and  Jeremy Clark shared the spoils with a win each.
