British Superkarts F125 Open at Cadwell

British Superkarts – CATTERMOLE SECURES FIRST TITLE – At the final rounds of the F125 Open English Championship at Cadwell Park last weekend, Kirk Cattermole collected a second place and a win to claim the E plate.

After qualifying second quickest in class he led the opening lap of race 1 from pole man Ian Larder, Stuart Parker (deputising for his brother) and Neil Robinson. On lap 2 Chris Needham moved up to third place after starting near the back of the grid and set off after Larder. By half distance Needham was second but still 3.947s behind Cattermole with Larder holding off Parker and Robinson. Needham set about reducing the gap and two laps later he was on Cattermole’s tail. On lap 7 he broke the lap record and took the lead in the process and pulled away to win by 1.949s.

The championship was poised for a close finish. In race 2 Cattermole took the lead at the start while Needham lost ground. At the end of lap 1 Cattermole was still at the front with Needham not far behind. Larder was in third place with Parker just ahead of Robinson. Needham dropped back on lap 2 allowing Larder to move into second place but regained the place on the next lap. Needham knew that he had to beat Cattermole to stand a chance of winning the championship. With two laps to go the gap was down to 0.649s but then he slowed. The plug tip had broken and his race was over. Cattermole reeled off the remaining laps to win by 13.52s and secure his first Superkart title. Larder ended a satisfying day with second place after problems he encountered at Anglesey. Robinson finished in third place holding off Parker who drove well on his return to a Superkart seat after several seasons away.
