WRIGLEY CROWNED 2016 MICHELIN GINETTA GT4 SUPERCUP CHAMPION

Tom Wrigley officially claimed the title 2016 Michelin Ginetta GT4 SuperCup Champion by finishing his season with a mere 3 point lead over rival Will Burns at Brands Hatch last weekend (2nd October)….it was down to the wire and nail biting stuff all the way…

It was a tough start for the eventureral champ with a quali time of 10th place gained in the first session whilst rival Burns was fastest man out the traps and a pace which was a clear 1 second above the rest of the pack. Jack Mitchell sat in second place with Mark Davies, Carl Boardley and Jamie Orton rounding out the top 5. In the AM’s, Colin White grabbed pole with David Brooks, Chris Ingram, Fraser Robertson and Grahame Tilley in hot pursuit.

When the lights changed for the first race it was a wet track but the action at the front was non-stop, Burns out front, a hard charging Davies pushed passed Mitchell into second and then a few laps on passed Burns to take the lead, however this did not last as Burns got back past and was first over the line when the chequered flag was shown. Davies, Mitchell and Broadley battled hard but ultimately came over the line in that order and Tom Hibbert finished fifth. Tom Wrigley managed to gain 3 places from the 10th place start but this result made the title lead drop to 12 points…

In the AM’s, White went backwards after a pole start in the first few laps of the race with Ingram and Robertson pushing to the front, this was not too last as the championship leader got back to the front and took the win and the title.

Race two the many opted for dry tyres although it looked like it was going to start raining at any time; a last minute change to wets for Davies, Robertson, Ingram, Brooks, Hibbert and Somerfield. With a damp surface Hibbert pulled a lead of 6.8 seconds over the pack but an incident brought out the safety car which bunched the pack and lost this advantage. The racing got back underway on lap 5, Hibbert again pulled a gap with Somerfield second, Boardley third with Mitchell in fourth being harassed by Burns and Gaffney. Wrigley ended his race in eighth after a decision to bring out the red flags because of worsening conditions. This meant Wrigley and Burns went into the final race of the day with a mere 7 points between them and with a reverse grid added to the mix it was going down to the wire.

What a race the finale was, a three way battle between Mitchell, Burns and Wrigley. It was a last lap lunge that saw Burns push past Mitchell at Paddock Hill but Wrigley was on his tail and came through too and the three of them were side by side for most of the last lap. Boardley took the win moving into third in the ultimate championship standings, Burns second and Wrigley third securing the title.

In the AM’s,  newly crowned 2016 champion Colin White secured another win, his 18th of the season.
